Pro-Khalistan slogans were raised inside the Golden Temple complex in Amritsar on Saturday as Sikh groups marked the 42nd anniversary of Operation Blue Star, the Indian Army operation carried out in June 1984 to remove armed militants from the shrine.
Members of several hardline Sikh organisations gathered near the Akal Takht, the highest temporal seat of Sikh authority, where slogans supporting Khalistan were raised. Participants were also seen carrying posters of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, who was killed during Operation Blue Star and remains a controversial figure in Punjab’s political and religious history.
June 6 marks the death anniversary of Bhindranwale, who headed the Damdami Taksal, a prominent Sikh religious institution. The anniversary continues to draw supporters and observers from
