The plants on the first approx. 450 pots of our new 2025/2026 greenhouse experiment for enhanced weathering have had a good start. Even more pots are coming soon... This week we have taken and measured the first set of leachate water samples.

Today Sam Davies, the CEO and co-founder of @FluxCarbon, visited the #projectcarbdown greenhouse. Flux is a pioneering Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) company unlocking the potential of Enhanced Rock Weathering (ERW) in Africa.

Early morning greetings from the #ProjectCarbdown experimentation field for enhanced weathering with the XXL Lysimeter Experiment, which is now two years and two weeks old. We still don’t see an increase in pH or alkalinity in the leachate waters (this soil is very special which also showed in our greenhouse experiment), but the over 40 other parameters that we have from the lab analyses, in total 15,000 data points in two years, do tell us some stories. Stay tuned. It becomes more and more clear, that this project was not a waste of time and money, even when the usual CDR indicators don‘t show a signal. Rocks rock!

A sample screenshot of our soil pCO2 sensor data from the recently added new experiments in the #projectcarbdown greenhouse.
The purple lines/areas show the CO2 concentrations of the untreated control (=top left graph), the gray line/areas show the readings for the pots with rock dust amendments during the first 7 days since inception of the experiment. Irrigation was started on day 3.
There is already a significant difference in CO2 in the amended pots compared to the control even during the first days of the experiment, which will continue to run for 1-3 years.
Some pots (bottom left 2, with very reactive amendments) have seen CO2 concentrations below 100 ppm right after setup and for several days.
The sensors take a measurement every minute which equals 10.080 data points per week per replica. These graphs cover 7 variants with up to 7 replicas, so what you see here is based on over 400.000 data points in one week.

#projectcarbdown Greenhouse experiment extension week, day 4: a time lapse video that shows the finishing touches to table 0 (LUFA 2.2 soil) with 7 amendments: irrigation system, tea bags with 5g of rock dust, 3g of grass seeds and finally the fluxmeter army.
#projectcarbdown Greenhouse experiment extension week, day 4: Finally we installed teabags with 5g of rock dust in the new lysimeters (will be pulled out in 1-2 years for analysis), installed the irrigation system and added 3g of grass seeds.

#projectcarbdown Greenhouse experiment extension week, day 2: a time lapse video of the phase when we finally placed 39 experiments on table 1. Some lysimeters are missing the lower water tank bucket which will come tomorrow.
#projectcarbdown Greenhouse experiment extension week, day 2: we already see a „signal“ in the pCO2 sensor data! This is already at 1-2 hours after setup. The pCO2 range goes from 130 ppm (steel slag) over 1200 (control, dunite) to 6250 (with calcite). Soil: LUFA 2.2

#projectcarbdown Greenhouse experiment extension week, day 2: At the end of the second day we have finished mixing soils and rock dusts and installed the soil pCO2 sensors today. It was dusty… 😬

This week we are building 78 new experiments in the #projectcarbdown greenhouse. On day one we were busy with preparing the soil, converting food-grade buckets into lysimeter parts and finalizing our soil pCO2 sensors.

Happy birthday, #projectcarbdown greenhouse! One year ago, Jan 28th, we built the first iteration of our enhanced weathering greenhouse experiment (see video), 20 scientists helped us.
Tomorrow we will start to build 80 additional lysimeters to extend the project.
Three years ago today we announced the start of #projectcarbdown where we try to measure the carbondioxide removal from the atmosphere by enhanced weathering on agriculturally used lands. We want to see "tons of CO2 captured&stored per hectare per year"!

Night action at the #projectcarbdown greenhouse: Our fluxmeter army is monitoring the CO2 efflux from our rock weathering experiments 24/7, day and night. Every 10 minutes we get 50 automated efflux measurements, the devices are fully autonomous and send their data to the cloud.
