#USA #Nigeria #SouthAfrica #Tunisia #Uganda #Zimbabwe: African Filmmakers Account for 35% of Projects Selected for US-Based Film Independent Global Media Makers LA Residency 2024
Film Independent, in partnership with the U.S. Department of State, has announced the selection of 14 feature projects from 12 countries for the 2024 edition of its Global Media Makers LA Residency.
The Residency is a five-week program that plugs mid-career filmmakers from historically underrepresented countries into the U.S. film industry ecosystem.
This year’s cohort, selected from a record number of over 650 filmmakers nominated to apply for the residency, includes filmmakers representing African countries, specifically participants from Nigeria, South Africa, Tunisia, Uganda, and Zimbabwe.
Five of the 14 selected projects, or 35%, are from African filmmakers! This might be a record of some sort.

Noteworthy is that US initiatives like this one are increasingly unfolding against the backdrop of heightened geopolitical competition for influence in Africa, and a recognition of the continent's economic potential with its young population.
