Over the past 3–4 years, two male tigers from Ratapani Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh 80% and May be come through corridors from melghat tiger reserve 20% have reached the forests of Gujarat at different times. One of these tigers, which set out earlier on its journey, had reached the forests of Godhra district. Currently, however, one male tiger has been roaming for more than a year in the forests of Chhota Udepur, within the Satpura mountain range. These are the same hills that form a vast network-like expanse extending up to Dahod, Vadodara and Godhra. Their twin also connects with Dungarpur in Rajasthan although these are the Aravallis. This landscape is strongly linked to Ratapani Reserve through a corridor. One part of it also connects from Melghat Tiger Reserve in Maharashtra via Omkareshwar and Mhow. This tiger has not arrived here through any weak corridor. It is an extremely strong corridor, rich with future possibilities, which urgently needs to be refined and strengthened today. WII and NTCA have also spoken of direct connectivity of the forests from Melghat and Ratapani through Dewas, Omkareshwar, Mhow and Indore. This corridor is not only extremely strong but is also covered with dense forests. It is not as if there are no tigers in this corridor at present. From my conversations with forest officials of Indore and Mhow, I learnt that evidence of the presence of 6–8 different tigers has been recorded in this corridor, and their numbers are continuously increasing. Some of these sightings have been registered from the Omkareshwar side. On this basis, I would not be exaggerating if I say that some of these tigers are carrying Melghat genes while others carry Ratapani genes. If I am proven right, in the next 10 years this corridor will emerge with a strong tiger presence. For better connectivity and security, one measure we can take is to create two separate tiger landscape (reserves) here, so that there is no lapse of any kind in protection. From my experience, however, this corridor is relatively safe from poachers. The patrolling by forest staff here is extremely strong and effective. Speaking from my experience, Omkareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary to Mhow and Indore Forest Division should be declared a joint tiger landscape. If we review the results after 10 years, the outcomes will be far better and more splendid than expected. This landscape currently has the capacity to hold more than 100 healthy tigers across an extensive area. We can improve this further and, by including kheoni Wildlife Sanctuary and the Ratapani corridor, take the capacity up to 200 tigers. In the districts of Guna, Vidisha, Ashoknagar, Sehore and Dewas, several thousand herbivores are damaging crops in the fields. These animals should be relocated into these corridors so that food availability for the tigers remains intact. This experiment, I say from my experience, will succeed.
