Giovanni Bellini, a paragon of the Venetian Renaissance, painted this Nunc dimittis (Hymn, Now Let Depart) around 1505. Almost invisible on Simeon's sleeve under his cloak is a clearly Arabic-based #Pseudoscript, at the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, Madrid. A late application.

More #Pseudoscript from Madrid. Fra Angelico, the painter of many luminous "Annunciations" has this Virgin of Humility at the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum. The script is an amalgam that must have gone through many iterations from whatever original model Fra Angelico was copying.

More #Pseudoscript from Madrid. Francesco Botticini, St Cecilia between St Valerian & St Tiburtius (1470) at the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum. The script looks like a mixture of Greek, Hebrew, and Kufic Arabic. It must have gone through many transformations from its original model.

Continuing with #pseudoscript, this time from the Prado Museum, and who else but Fra Angelico in this vivid Virgin with the Pomegranate from around 1424-26, with the hems of the virgin and child covered with pronounced pseudo Naskhi Mamluk reminiscent of metalwork inscriptions.

1-4 🧵#Pseudoscript (the Arabic variation). I left the best one for last with which to close 2022 and my Tuscan sojourn (Happy New Year). Gentile da Fabriano, Adoration of the Magi, an altarpiece completed in May 1423 for the Church of Santa Trinita, Florence. Now at the #Uffizi:

One of the oldest Arabized #pseudoscript I found is this 1285 painted wooden panel of the Madonna & Child with Angels by Duccio di Boninsegna from Siena. The pseudo letters-appear on the angels' armbands, the curtain header and the cushion's hem behind the Madonna. At the Uffizi.

An early and rare occurrence of a #pseudoscript (mangled Arabic+Hebrew) on the hem of the diaphanous tunic of the crucified Jesus in this 1310-15 painted wooden cross by a Florentine master known as the Master of the Corsi Crucifix, at the Uffizi Gallery.
