Can a school be classed as ‘top performing’ if it isn’t meeting the needs of its whole community?
This is why #pureaccountability, not simply standardised national metrics, increasingly matters for defining genuine success in today’s education system.
Indeed, embracing pure accountability is an act grounded in moral ambition and courage in an otherwise ‘high stakes’ system. More and more leaders and boards are doing so, and the white paper provides a helpful - but by no means sufficient - nudge towards it.

My new article for the National Governance Association. In 2020 I introduced the term #pureaccountability. Essentially, public organisations - like others - should recognise formative accountability to those on the frontline is a gold mine of real-time, firsthand feedback for continuous improvement. Bureaucratic or top down accountability ensures compliance, but is no longer enough alone to drive the necessary improvement, adaptions & innovation in this era. #BeingTheCEO
