I had written to Amerlana… we are intended for each other; I told her I would visit her on my way to Holy Hill, but I received no response? I went to their estate anyway, it was late, but the Lord and the Lady were still awake, they invited me in, but Amerlana was not there. “Lady Crooksnare had been crying, and the Lord looked frantic with worry. I asked if I could do anything, but they assured me that I could not, they had a bed made up for me, and I was shown to a chamber. I settled into my room, but I could not sleep; I was worried about Amerlana, so I went down to the kitchen to make myself some hot milk. “Before I opened the door, I heard two voices, angry and accusing; it was the Lord and Lady. Lord Bracken barked at his wife that this would never have happened if she had not encouraged the marriage of a Haertfyre to a Daedhollow. She responded, ‘It is all Morhall’s daughter’s fault.’ She had blackmailed Amerlana into going there. Now, Thomlin was dead, and they were all in danger.
