Gears of War: E-Day is a breakthrough moment for the XBOX Series S. Using a technique developed with the platform team and ATG, their memory mapping system treats the SSD as a new tier of RAM. ▪️The game utilizes the ultra-fast NVMe storage speed to instantly swap assets in and out of the hardware RAM as if the SSD itself were part of the console's memory pool. ▪️Digital Foundry says the technique allows the Xbox Series S to retain the same geometry and environmental complexity as the beefier Xbox Series X, rather than offering a visibly "stripped-back" version of the game world. ▪️The Coalition's innovative use of the SSD is being widely praised as a technical blueprint that other Microsoft studios are already looking to adopt for future memory-constrained games ▪️Kate Rayner says this technique let the team avoid lowering the quality of the game, and that is a fascinating blueprint for future game development on Series S.
