Libya’s Muammar Qadhafi said the Israeli regime must be eliminated — words born of outrage at decades of occupation and oppression of Palestinians.

What a story! In 1970, a group of Libyan exiles hired SAS-founder #DavidStirling for a raid on a Tripolis compound. It was supposed to be the prelude to a coup against #Qadhafi. Yet Western governments intervened & Stirling's French mercenaries never made it out of port

The #US & its European allies’ contribution to the 2011 toppling of Muammar #Qadhafi “was not, nor could it be, repeated ever since. While invoking the responsibility to protect the civilian population, the West’s intervention had a variety of additional #motivations.” ~ T. Mitri

Catching up after a week rich in #Libya-related discussions with media.
This week marked the 10th year since Muammar #Qadhafi's assassination. 10 years since the collapse of the regime.
Also Libya #stabilisation conference in #Tripoli and much focus on scheduled #elections.
#Libya had grown to be a very wealthy country and had no external debt. #NATO_bombed the Great Man-Made River in July 2011, destroying key civilian infrastructure: a war crime.

N’oublions quand même pas que bien avant #Pegasus, deux sociétés françaises (Amesys et Qosmos) ont vendu de la technologie numérique répressive à #Bachar_al_Assad et à #Qadhafi. Avec le soutien actif du gouvernement français.
#Russian (para)military units acting as #mercenaries on #Libyan soil is nothin’ new under the sun.
The model was instituted in the 1980s, when #Qadhafi offered money to the #Soviet army in return for small extracurricular gigs.

“#Qadhafi eviscerated civil society, & — w/ the exception of the NOC & some financial bodies — gutted most governing institutions. He distributed the country’s staggering oil wealth through a #hypercentralized system of clientelism designed to reward loyalty & punish dissent.”
Just published in hardcover: The Oxford Handbook of Contemporary Middle Eastern & North African History. Honored to write a chapter on the historiography of post-2011 #Libya. Stellar contributors: Eugene Rogan, Rosie Bsheer, Michael Provence, Larbi Sadiki, & more. @OUPHistory

![JMJalel_H's tweet photo. #LOpinion asked me about #Qadhafi’s legacy 10 years on.
My response was that present-day #Libya’s Central Bank is the clearest example of how enduring #Qadhafi-style governance has proved to me.
