Logline:
In Okinawa in 2040, where Quantum AI has freed humanity from survival labor, young play designer HARU begins to question a society where even play has become ranked and measured — leading him to rediscover what it truly means to feel alive.
Synopsis:
By 2040, Quantum AI has transformed society through Universal Basic Work (UBW), a social infrastructure that provides the essential labor required for food, clothing, housing, transportation, and healthcare. Freed from labor alienation, humanity has begun transitioning toward a society centered on play, creativity, and human experience.
In Okinawa, nature and technology coexist in harmony. Portable Habitat capsules unfold into homes, advanced food printers generate meals using cultivated cells, and adaptive clothing responds to each person's body and mood.
Through PlayForge, people can create, share, and experience their own forms of play within quantum spatial layers that merge physical and generated realities. Anyone can become both a creator and a player. Creativity itself has become a form of social value.
HARU, a young university student studying play design, embraces this new world. But as he observes a culture increasingly obsessed with rankings, stimulation, competition, and recognition, he begins to question whether play is truly making people free.
If play becomes something we perform for status, can it become another form of alienation?
Inspired by Urizun, an Okinawan word for early summer, when life flourishes with renewed energy, HARU begins to rediscover the essence of play.
Play is the free movement of the particles of the heart.
He realizes that the future is not defined by technology itself, but by the moments when we lose track of time, become fully immersed in the present, and feel vividly alive.
Personal Statement:
I grew up in Okinawa, a place where subtropical nature, human connection, and a distinctive sense of time are deeply woven into everyday life.
Today, many visions of an AI-driven future focus on automation, efficiency, competition, and the fear that humans will eventually be replaced by machines. But I believe there is another future worth imagining.
What if AI does not replace humanity, but gives us back the time to be human?
This question became the starting point for Quantum Playground.
I want to imagine a future in which technology liberates people from labor performed merely for survival, allowing us to spend more of our lives playing, creating, connecting with others, and experiencing the natural world.
At the emotional heart of the film is the Okinawan word Urizun. It refers to early summer, when the dry season gives way to moisture and warmth, and life begins to flourish with extraordinary vitality.
In this film, Urizun becomes more than a season. It represents a state of being: losing track of time, becoming fully present, and feeling life move vividly within us.
Through the landscapes of Okinawa and an optimistic vision of AI, I want to ask audiences a simple question:
What kind of future do we actually want to create together?
Quantum Playground is my attempt to imagine an AI future that helps us rediscover what it means to be human.
TREATMENT:
ALIENATION AND URIZUN — The Philosophical Background of 『QUANTUM PLAYGROUND』
① Alienation — Hegel → Feuerbach → Marx
QUANTUM PLAYGROUND begins with the problem of alienation. Hegel saw it as Spirit externalizing itself and later reclaiming that form as its own. Feuerbach reframed it as religion: humanity projects its ideals onto God, who then comes to dominate humanity as something greater than itself. Marx grounded it in labor — under capitalism, what people create (commodities, capital, economic systems) grows into a force independent of them, ruling their lives instead of serving them. I was drawn to this reversal: people subordinated to the very systems they built in order to live.
② From Labor Alienation to a Society of Play
By 2040, Quantum AI has made Universal Basic Work (UBW) possible — food, clothing, housing, transport, and healthcare sustained as social infrastructure, freeing humanity from labor performed purely for survival. This isn't AI "taking jobs"; it's AI giving people back the time they once had to sell just to stay alive. So what do people do with that freedom? I imagined a "society of play" emerging through PlayForge, where anyone can bring imagined play into physical reality. It looks like a utopia beyond alienation — but the film asks: is play really free from alienation too? Not necessarily.
③ The Alienation of Play
Freedom from labor doesn't mean freedom from evaluation. Once play carries social value, new measures appear — who made the best play, how many played it, what rank it holds. Play, meant to liberate, gets quantified and optimized again. People stop playing because they want to and start playing to be evaluated — Marx's inversion, reappearing in new form. This is the Alienation of Play, symbolized by HARU and Z's ranking rivalry — not villain vs. hero, but two people who love play, watching its goal quietly shift:
PLAY → SCORE → RANKING → RECOGNITION
Play begins to reproduce the logic of work. So the film doesn't end with a simple claim that ending labor makes people happy — it asks what comes next: once freed from labor, can humanity actually become free?
④ URIZUN
The film's other core is the Okinawan word Urizun — the Okinawan season of early summer, when moisture returns to the land and life begins to stir with renewed vitality. To me it's the moment something dried-out begins to grow moist again — an image I map onto the human heart. Amid competition, ranking, and optimization, our dried-out senses reconnect with the world: feeling wind, losing track of time, moving the body, being drawn to someone for no reason. In these moments, the question "what use is this?" disappears.
⑤ Play as the Free Movement of the Heart — and Why Make This Film
Play is the free movement of the particles of the heart.
What matters isn't play's content but whether the heart moves freely within it — that's the line between play and alienation. Stepping back from evaluation to reconnect with our own senses and the world, we become subjects again. I call that state Urizun.
This film asks something deeper than "what happens when AI takes our jobs": can humans live without being ruled by the systems they create? Under capitalism it was labor and capital; under AI it might be algorithms; even a society of play can reproduce it as ranking and recognition. What's needed isn't just better technology, but a shift in what we live for. UBW gives us back time; PlayForge gives us the power to create; Urizun asks what we'll use them for.
The future I want to depict isn't one where AI replaces humanity — it's one where, freed from survival labor, humans can finally ask what it means to be human. I want to find that answer not in efficiency or success, but in losing track of time, in resonance with others, in connection with nature, in the pulse of life itself. That is Urizun.
SCIENTIFIC & TECHNOLOGICAL BASIS:
Basis for UBW
Universal Basic Work (UBW) is a speculative extension of technological trends already visible today in automation, robotics, and biotechnology.
In agriculture, autonomous tractors, robotic harvesting systems, computer vision, and AI-assisted crop management are being developed to reduce dependence on human labor and increase the autonomy of food production. In parallel, cellular agriculture and cultivated-meat research are exploring ways to produce food directly from cultivated cells, while automation and 3D bioprinting are being investigated as possible tools for future food manufacturing.
UBW extrapolates these developments toward 2040. Rather than assuming that a single technology replaces all human labor, the film imagines multiple automated systems — coordinated by advanced AI — gradually forming an infrastructure capable of supplying the basic labor required for food, energy, housing, transportation, and healthcare.
In this sense, UBW is not presented as an existing technology, but as a future social model built upon the continuing automation of the systems that sustain everyday human life.
Basis for PlayForge:
PlayForge is a speculative extension of several existing research fields rather than a single hypothetical technology.
The first is hybrid quantum-classical computing. Current quantum computers do not outperform classical computers at every computational task. A more realistic direction is hybrid computation, in which quantum processors are combined with classical systems and applied selectively to problems such as optimization, simulation, and complex system modeling.
PlayForge extrapolates this approach toward a future Quantum AI capable of coordinating large numbers of people, generated objects, environmental conditions, and overlapping experiences in real time.
The second foundation is contactless multisensory interaction. Research already exists into mid-air haptics using focused ultrasound, directional and personalized sound fields, spatial light and holographic display technologies, and localized thermal stimulation. These technologies remain separate and at different stages of development today.
PlayForge imagines that by 2040 they could be integrated into a distributed environmental infrastructure controlled by Quantum AI.
Rather than rendering an entire virtual world continuously, the system dynamically generates a high-precision perceptual environment — a Reality Bubble — around each participant. Within this zone, visual, auditory, tactile, thermal, olfactory, and spatial cues are synchronized with physical simulation and the surrounding real environment.
When multiple Reality Bubbles overlap, Quantum AI reconciles their generated objects, participants, and physical surroundings in real time, allowing individual experiences to temporarily become shared realities.
The underlying principle is therefore not that PlayForge creates another world separate from reality, but that it renders human perception within physical reality itself.
“The world isn't rendered everywhere. It's rendered around you.”
Scientific Positioning:
The technologies depicted in QUANTUM PLAYGROUND should therefore be understood as speculative but research-grounded extrapolations, rather than predictions that these exact systems will exist by 2040.
UBW extends current developments in agricultural robotics, autonomous systems, cellular agriculture, AI, and automation toward the possibility of basic labor becoming increasingly infrastructural.
PlayForge similarly combines emerging research in hybrid quantum-classical computing, spatial computing, directional acoustics, contactless haptics, multisensory integration, and environmental control into a fictional future platform.
The film asks what might happen if these currently separate fields converge over the next fifteen years — and uses Okinawa in 2040 as a setting in which to explore the social and human consequences of that convergence.
KEY CONCEPT GLOSSARY:
Quantum AI
An advanced AI infrastructure supported by hybrid quantum-classical computing. The foundational technology that liberates humanity (B) from labor alienation (A) and enables the transition to a society centered on play (C).
UBW (Universal Basic Work)
The social infrastructure provided by Quantum AI. The labor services supplied: the "survival labor" required for food, clothing, housing, transport, and healthcare.
PlayForge (Reality Rendering Infrastructure)
A spatial OS that converts human-imagined "play" into experiences within physical space via Quantum AI. Unlike conventional VR, it does not move people into a virtual world — it renders the real world itself, in real time, to match human perception. Quantum AI integrates and controls a distributed network of micro-devices embedded in cities, architecture, and natural environments (controlling visible light, acoustics, ultrasound, infrared, airflow, scent, and temperature), computing in real time a person's position/gaze/body movement/surrounding environment/relationships with others/experience within PlayForge.
Reality Bubble
A high-precision perceptual zone that PlayForge dynamically forms around each individual user. Standard radius approximately 100m — not a physical boundary, but a standard rendering range that expands and contracts in real time depending on population density, environment, required precision, and the nature of the experience. Multisensory integration within the bubble — sight, hearing, touch, smell, thermal sense, and kinesthesia — is synthesized as a target for rendering. "PlayForge renders perception, not just images."
