Q-Day is the point at which a quantum computer becomes powerful enough to break the public-key cryptography that secures today's blockchains.
No one knows exactly when it will arrive. But the trend is clear: estimates keep moving closer as quantum hardware improves.
That matters because blockchains are permanent public ledgers. Every exposed public key visible on-chain today can be copied, stored, and attacked once quantum computers become capable of deriving the corresponding private keys.
The migration challenge is considerable.
Retiring DES took more than two decades, with governments, centralized procurement, and top-down coordination driving the transition.
Crypto has to coordinate a similar migration across thousands of independent developers, miners, validators, exchanges, custodians, wallets, and users—without anyone in charge.

ZK BIP32 derivation proofs, post-quantum and client-side 🤤
An excellent example of what Binius64 is great at, and a potential practical answer for one of the harder questions a chain’s post quantum migration must answer - how do you prove a coin is yours once a quantum attacker can forge the same signature?
Instead of signing some message to prove an address is yours, you prove you know how it was derived instead. Signatures don’t survive quantum computers but hashes do and derivation is all about hashes.
It’s also super fast; ~240ms proof gen, ~40ms verification, on a laptop, CPU only. Faster than previous work by 16x.
And the only security assumption is SHA-256.

Post-quantum authentication is the biggest cybersecurity threat. It means generating fake signatures and gaining unauthorized access.
$NET expects to be fully post-quantum secure by 2029.
The executive order 14412 from June sets 2031 as the deadline for post-quantum authentication:
“transition all HVAs [High Value Assets] and high impact systems to use PQC [Post Quantum Cryptography] for digital signatures by December 31, 2031”
This means the US government believes useful quantum computers will exist by then.
