These Central Computing Division staff members are installing their new tape 📼 silo in 1992 Data stored on the tape was accessed and read by robot arms 🤖 We use a very similar tape library system at SCD to this day! #RALcomputing

#SpotTheDifference SCD graduate Will showed us some of the machine room kit running today - how does it compare to what we had in 1973? It's certainly a bit noiser - ear defenders are compulsory safety equipment in 2020! 🎧 #RALcomputing @STFC_Matters @RutherfordApLab

In 1975 Atlas Computing Laboratory merged with the Rutherford Laboratory and became part of the Science Research Council ✨ This ICL 2904 computer was purchased to manage the grants 🤑 and awards 🏆 given by the Council #RALcomputing

Harwell has been a pioneer of computing since the 1950s. Here’s Jim Stephen in 1955 with CADET, the first fully transistorised computer in Europe #RALcomputing CADET (and its predecessors) were used to solve physics equations too complex to solve by hand 📈
