Governor, if you're going to lecture everybody about misinformation, then you need to be just as careful with the facts yourself. Let me start with what shouldn't even be controversial. Measles is real. It can be dangerous. The MMR vaccine is highly effective. Parents should have accurate information and talk to their doctors. I'm also not going to defend every claim Robert Kennedy makes just because he's arguing with Josh Shapiro. Facts are facts no matter which side they're coming from. But there's a whole lot of political spin in this post. You keep bringing up these two Pennsylvania deaths while talking about vaccination and the measles outbreak. We now know one of those two people was a newborn who died from a lacerated spleen. The Lancaster County Coroner said the forensic pathologist did not believe the death was related to measles. That's not some internet conspiracy theory. That's the coroner. And there's an even more obvious problem with using that newborn in an argument about being unvaccinated. A newborn isn't even old enough to receive the MMR vaccine. So why was that death presented to Pennsylvanians the way it was? Then there's the vaccination-rate argument. You want people to believe Kennedy's actions are responsible for falling vaccination rates and outbreaks. But Pennsylvania's kindergarten MMR rate was already dropping years before Kennedy became HHS Secretary. It was 96.6% in 2019-20, 95.5% in 2020-21, 95% in 2021-22, 94% in 2022-23 and 93.5% in 2023-24. Kennedy didn't become HHS Secretary until February 2025. The current number is 93.2%. You can disagree with Kennedy. You can criticize things he's said. But don't take a decline that was happening for years and suddenly pretend one guy who took office last year caused it. And the fetal-cell issue isn't as simple as you're making it sound either. No, the final MMR vaccine does not contain intact fetal tissue or fetal cells. That's true. But the FDA's own package insert says the rubella component is propagated in WI-38 human diploid lung fibroblasts, a cell line originally derived from fetal tissue. Even Catholic organizations have discussed the moral concern surrounding vaccines produced using abortion-derived cell lines. So people having a religious or moral objection to that connection isn't some made-up conspiracy theory. You can explain the science accurately without pretending the history doesn't exist. And saying measles was basically gone before Kennedy came along is some pretty convenient political framing too. The United States had 1,274 measles cases in 2019, years before Kennedy ran HHS. None of this means measles isn't serious. None of it means vaccines don't work. It means stop turning public health into another partisan campaign commercial. Especially when your own Department of Health is currently trying to expand its communicable-disease authority. If you're going to demand that Pennsylvanians trust the government, then give them the entire story. Don't cherry-pick facts, blame whoever is politically convenient, and then call anyone who asks questions a source of “misinformation.” Trust doesn't come from telling people which experts they're allowed to question. It comes from being honest enough to give them all the facts and letting them make informed decisions. That's what I expect from Robert Kennedy. That's what I expect from Josh Shapiro.
