This week we held the 2nd Forum for the Africa Network of Centers of Excellence for #DisasterRiskReduction (NOE), alongside the #RCMRDat50 celebrations.
Hosted by #RCMRD, with the support from the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (@AICS_Nairobi ) through @UNDRR_Africa, and facilitated by @wascalclimate and #UCT-CSAG who are the implementing partners of the NOE-III project, in collaboration with the NOE Network members, the NoE Forum activity aims to convene #DRR experts within the Network for knowledge sharing and a review on the implementation of the NOE 3 year roadmap activities.
The event also focused on research and innovation, network sustainability and communication and outreach. Further, the network members also engaged with high level participants at the #RCMRDat50 celebrations and supported in the networking session in the Disaster Risk Reduction booth.

In 1991, Mr. Asfaw Fanta from πͺπΉ Ethiopia was appointed as the 4th Director General of RCMRD. He led the Centre until 1995, following his role as General Manager of the Ethiopian Mapping Agency (EMA) now Ethiopian Geospatial Information Agency
That same year, the 2nd Conference of Ministers was held at @UNEP HQ in Nairobi, opened by the late Hon. Prof. George Saitoti, then Kenyaβs Vice President & Finance Minister.

To ensure effective #map production, the Centre upgraded its #Cartography laboratory with new equipment and facilities. It also recruited highly skilled staff to manage a systematic online operation-from #data compilation and fair drawing to the final printing and distribution of maps to clients.

πThe first regional #GIS training course took place at RCMRD from 31 July -27 October 1989-with 9 participants selected equally from #Lesotho, #Ghana , and #Uganda.
πConducted in collaboration with @UNEP and @UNITAR, the course aimed to equip specialists with #GIS technology skills to support national resource management in their home countries.
To date, GIS remains at the core of our mission

Did you know? The 1st RCMRD Conference of Ministers (CoM) was held in 1986 in Mbabane, Eswatini πΈπΏ.
Hosted with support from the Government of King Mswati III, this historic gathering saw the launch of #RCMRDβs second five-year development plan.
The CoM is the Centreβs highest governing body compromised of Ministers from our 20 member States, which meets every four years to review and approve RCMRD's strategic and development plans.

As part of our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities and in celebration of #RCMRDat50 , we paid a special visit to Kasarani Treeside School for the Deaf
The event, graced by our Director of Geospatial Services Mr Maphuru and Director of Corporate Services, Mr Idude was an opportunity to support and give back to the community.
RCMRD donated chairs, desks and food to help enhance the schoolβs learning environment - a small gesture to show our commitment to inclusion, education, and community.

In December 1986, the Centre acquired its first computer-based GIS through a USAID grant, aimed at facilitating the overlay of maps and remote sensing images.
Following the installation of this integrated system-combining image processing and GIS-the Centre received overwhelming interest from the GIS user community.
In response to this growing demand, the Centre decided to incorporate GIS application technology into its projects and training programmes.

π’ Reflecting on the Second Decade (1986β1995) -#rcmrdanniversary #RCMRDat50
During this decade, #RCMRD focused on institutional building- construction of its permanent premises and the consolidation of core operations in #Surveying and #Mapping.
It was also during this period that Remote Sensing was officially integrated into the Centre's services β marking a major leap in technological advancement. π°οΈ
π Growth continued, with five more countries joining the RCMRD , expanding our membership to 14 member States by 1995.

On 13 April 1981, two southern African Kingdoms β The Kingdom of Lesotho and The Kingdom of Swaziland (now known as Eswatini) - officially joined the #RCMRD the same day, becoming our 8th and 9th member States, respectively.
These two nations are proudly recognized as the Centreβs second set of βtwinsβ! π―ββοΈ
Fun Fact: Lesotho is famously known as "The Kingdom in the Sky" a tribute to its stunning high-altitude landscapes! β°οΈπ±πΈ

π 1979: We welcomed our 2nd Director General, Mr. Bernard Sikilo from πΉπΏ Tanzania, who led RCMRD for 9 years (1979 β 5 Dec 1988).
π 1980: On 28 November 1980, two countries joined RCMRD:
π°π² Comoros (nicknamed βThe Perfume Islandβ)
πΏπ² Zambia (βThe Real Africaβ)
π These two became our first twin member States, joining on the same day as the 6th and 7th member States

RCMRD Milestones: #RCMRDat50
π 1982-Renamed to Regional Centre for Services in Surveying, Mapping and Remote Sensing (RCSSMRS) to reflect expanded focus including Remote Sensing.
π’ By June 1985, the Centre moved to its permanent home in Kasarani, Nairobi.
π 1983- Canada through International Development Research Centre (IDRC) supported cartography programmes and as a result of that a Department of Cartography was established-boosting capacity in mapping and spatial data.
π 1984-π«π· France (French Technical Assistance) backed the Remote Sensing Department.
π°οΈ Enabled purchase of SPOT satellite imagery and training in satellite image interpretation.
