इन अकाल के दिनों में दलितों को बहुत ज्यादा श्रम करना पड़ता था, किंतु कमाई बहुत कम हो पाती थी। विशेष रूप से जमींदारों के खेतों की सिंचाई के लिए बहुत मेहनत करनी पड़ती थी। दलितों को जमींदारों द्वारा काम पर बुलाने के लिए एक विचित्र परंपरा थी। हर रोज रात के पिछले पहर में जब भी विभिन्न गांवों में पालतू मुर्गे जोर-जोर से कुकड़ू कूं की आवाज निकालते हुए बोलते थे, सारे जमींदार अपने-अपने घरों के बाहर खड़े होकर हरवाहों के नाम लेकर जोर-जोर से बुलाने लगते थे। हर दलित हरवाहा अपने मालिक की आवाज सुनकर जोर से चिल्लाकर उत्तर देता : ‘आवत हई मालिक’। जमींदारों द्वारा बुलाए जाने वाले शब्द प्राय: बड़े ही निरादरपूर्ण होते थे। पहली आवाज पर कुछ उत्तर न मिलने पर वे गालियां देते हुए दोबारा आवाज लगाते थे। दलित इन गालियों का जवाब नहीं दे पाते थे। इस तरह प्रतिदिन सूर्योदय से एक दो-घंटे पहले ही मुर्गों की बांग पर दलित काम पर चले जाते थे और शाम तक श्रम करते रहते थे। अत्यधिक काम के बाद थककर अधपेट खाकर रात में सोये हुए दलित मुर्गे की आवाज के बाद बिना नींद पूरी हुए मजबूरी में जागने पर प्रतिदिन दुखित होकर उन मुर्गों को गालियां देते थे।
