Breakout 1 - Demystifying EDI
โBuilding an EDI strategy is not easy, but focusing on why you are doing this and why you are not. Be fully transparent with your staff.
Your first step in the EDI process should be led by the data, look internally gather insights and ask your staff what they are looking for and what the culture is.
The most successful EDI strategy is set up like project plan and has clear accountability, goals and deadlines"

Involving your staff is really important and highlighting lived experience is better than an email to all in the company about important festivals.
There is an educational piece around bringing more women into the construction business and having to understand if the opinion of the hiring individual or the company"

"The problem with umbrella companies is mainly the loss of revenue that these people are taking away from the exchequer.
Looking at the push towards umbrella companies that was quite dramatic in 2021.
The worker doesn't really have a choice in how they're paid and they don't understand the set up. The loan charge for example has been an absolutely awful situation for workers who have found themselves caught up.
One of the main areas I was campaigning on was holiday pay.
I think it needs to be actively policed. I think HMRC needs to step in on things like holiday pay in much the same way they do on National Minimum Wage
With an umbrella company if it looks too good to be true, it is!"

"Government is aware of the issues that are applying both in terms of workers rights and the tax and fraudulent behaviour and is looking for how to take it forward
How AI is being used in this space, it's a huge enable but what are the risks?
Care is a sector that concerns me a great deal partly because of the impact on the workers but also care is a sector providing assitance to vulnerable people.
As soon as you say this is the definition of an umbrella company you'll find clever people who can slide around that definition. I'm not saying you shouldn't have statutory regulation but I am saying that is only part of the solution.
What I see is workers being exploited in sectors of the market where there are shortages of labour
Try and focus regulation on the harm rather than the means, for the the harm is all about exploitation of workers. The harm is about the lack of transparency for who is responsible for what
The regulators do need messages coming from businesses about what you think would work best in your space.
I think looking at the risks to your business is really important. "

Breakout 3 - The sustainable recruitment firm, what does Net Zero mean for recruitment?
"In previous energy transitions, women have often missed out as the transition has progressed.
Its people in parts of the country that need support in being industrialised, that are at risk of job security.
Research has shown that particularly amongst millennials, people are willing to take a pay cut to work somewhere that addresses climate anxiety.
I would like govt to make it easier for people to be able to invest in their current and developing workforce. To be able to do that, we need to join up govt departments and to address systemic issues collectively."

"Specific impacts are going to be based on regional context as well as policy frameworks.
Leadership should be bringing in the opportunities for upskilling and reskilling.
Something that is both net zero and labour market related is public transport... but the problem with public transport is the cost of that. Public transport needs to be more financially accessible and viable. public transport and the cost of that is what we need to address."
