Pagasa is also not ruling out the possibility of a landfall or a close approach over Catanduanes, as Uwan moves closer to the Bicol Region. According to Pagasaโs forecast track, Uwan would be over the coastal waters of Pandan, Catanduanes, by 11:00 a.m. of Sunday. | @GabrielLaluINQ

JUST IN: For the first time since 1963, @dost_pagasa assigns a local name to a tropical cyclone outside the Philippine area of responsibility.
The tropical depression over the West Philippine Sea has been given the name #RominaPH.

This aerial footage reveal that while the damage to property was widespread in #Panganiban, #Catanduanes, it's not comparable to what STY #Goni #RollyPH did in #Bato in 2020. Very strong landfall of the former, but probably "just" at CAT 4 or 130-135 knots (1-min).

#Typhoon #ManYi #PepitoPH is now a high-end CAT-3 storm with sustained winds of 205 kph (1-min) per JTWC. 175 kph (10-min) per @dost_pagasa and JMA. Still intensifying. This will be the most intense tropical cyclone to hit #Catanduanes since Super Typhoon #Goni #RollyPH in 2020.
On this day in 2020, Super Typhoon #Goni (#RollyPH) makes landfall in Catanduanes as a Category 5 super typhoon in the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC).
With 1-min sustained winds of 315 km/h in the US scale, it is the strongest-landfalling tropical cyclone in recorded history - previously held by TCs Haiyan (2013) and Meranti (2016) with 305 km/h.
At the time, PAGASA raised Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 4 in Metro Manila, marking the only second time to do so since 1991 (the other time was during STY Rosing (Angela) in 1995).
It was also the only second super typhoon (220 km/h) recorded by the state weather bureau since the newly revamped TC scale in 2015, and was later lowered to 185 km/h in 2022.

STY #Goni #RollyPH, for me, completes the trio of tropical cyclones that seat in the upper echelon of meteorological records for the past 30 years. STY #Haiyan #YolandaPH and Hurricane #Patricia were the other two.
