I wanted to respectfully share some of my personal thoughts and opinions about the recently released content for Warcraft III: Reforged.
Personally, the new, more cartoonish artistic direction doesn’t appeal to me as much as the fantasy-meets-realism style of Reforged’s original models. Even so, most of the new designs still look quite good and remain very faithful to the classic models, as do the new characters introduced in the expansion. This becomes even more apparent when you zoom in with the camera, especially when using the World Editor to observe them in greater detail.
I also want to highlight the new story in Forsaken Kingdom positively. Although I haven’t had the opportunity to play the expansion myself yet, I’ve seen many very enthusiastic impressions from players who have already experienced it, particularly regarding its atmosphere, world-building, and this new chapter in the Forsaken’s story. I’m glad to see the campaign generating so much interest among fans, and personally, I’m really looking forward to playing it soon.
What does disappoint me somewhat is that, overall, the visual presentation gives me the impression of a smaller-scale, lower-budget production. At times, the aesthetic feels closer to something designed for a mobile-oriented experience, such as Warcraft Rumble.
That said, I don’t think a more cartoonish art style is necessarily a bad direction in itself. With a larger scope, stronger production values, more time, and more resources behind it, I believe that style could have been developed into something much more polished and visually impressive. I still hope that, over time, it can continue to be improved through updates, focusing on the models, textures, lighting, and other details.
To give one concrete example, I think the body proportions of several hero, unit, and creature designs could be improved. A considerable number of them, despite having attractive designs and remaining faithful to the originals, look somewhat squat visually. They are faithful to the classic models, yes, but they could be much more visually appealing with slightly more streamlined proportions and a higher level of detail.
For instance, the generic Demon Hunter has a design that is very faithful to his classic Warcraft III appearance and already looks quite good. However, if his body proportions were brought a little closer to his Reforged design, he could look even better. This same approach could also be applied to most heroes and units in general.
It would also be great to see unique models created for key campaign heroes, units, and creatures. The Dreadlords are a good example of this, as Reforged gives each Dreadlord a unique custom model, and honestly, they look really good.
The Pit Lords are another good example, along with many other heroes, units, and creatures. Implementing something similar would be very appealing and would add greater visual variety and personality to the game.
If all of this were also accompanied by improvements to the graphics, textures, lighting, and other details, the overall result could be considerably more polished and visually appealing. I hope that, over time and through future updates, different improvements like these can be implemented.
Personally, I still prefer Reforged’s original artistic direction, with its combination of fantasy and realism that feels closer to Blizzard’s CGI cinematics. But I also believe that this new style, if properly developed and refined, could achieve a truly outstanding result.
I have always felt that the real problem with Reforged was that the game simply wasn’t given enough time or resources to reach its full potential. The 2018 demo of The Culling of Stratholme is a good example of this. It looked considerably better than the final game, and I still believe that if Blizzard had continued building upon that version — improving the textures, models, lighting, animations, quality-of-life features, and gameplay — the final result could have been something truly great.
One of my biggest wishes as a Warcraft fan is that, if Blizzard ever makes Warcraft IV — and truly does it right — it would recapture the spirit of Warcraft III while bringing the series into modern technology. I would love to see visuals approaching the quality of the best CGI cinematics from World of Warcraft, or even the 2016 Warcraft movie: a true AAA RTS built with a high-end engine such as Unreal Engine 5 or equivalent technology.
Something that genuinely feels like a generational leap over Warcraft III. A game with a huge single-player campaign, deep storytelling, memorable characters, and a story with the same weight and impact that Reign of Chaos and The Frozen Throne had in their time.
That is the kind of Warcraft I would love to see someday. ❤️
