I can’t believe 10 years later and the #RUReferencelist is about to trend again, I hate that institution with everything in me
This historical moment & photo is only 5 months shy of being a decade old from today.
Throwback to 19 April 2016:
A generation of fearless young women who had enough of institutionalised rape culture.

Today is a good day to support an activist fighting for retribution. ✨

While at UCKAR when I bumped into Olorato at the journalism dept we always spoke about challenges facing students. We disagreed sometimes, but as a journalist she told our stories during FMF and #RUReferenceList and always put black womxn first. Her death hurts #JusticeforOlorato
Thank you so much Gorata!
We owe it to the courageous activists who participated in the #RUReferencelist to ensure that they don't experience further harm through the work we produce.
Who did she abuse? I’m glad you weren’t the Vice-Chancellor at UCKAR during the #RUReferenceList protests. We would have endured even worse than the nonsense we had to put up with from Mabz.
@badgalsherri So she’s an abuser herself?🤷🏽♀️
Today is 8 years since I partook in this historical act of defiance. Baring my bare chest to the world and reclaiming my power. I refused to be silenced.
I remember #RUReferenceList and #RUNakedProtest 19 April 2016.

#RUReferenceList protestors set a precedent for many across the country on how communities should deal with rape accused individuals when institutions of higher learning and work places alike fail to protect their communities and victims at large.
Coincidentally today is the 8th anniversary of the #RUReferenceList protests and movement; a defining moment in my life that changed my trajectory in so many different ways.
We broke the silence against rape culture and named our perpetrators to no longer carry the shame alone.
it's ironic because i distinctly remember 702 and eNCA demonising miners at Marikana, uncritically publishing police press releases during the #RUreferencelist protests and refusing to engage with activists, uncritically pushing university admin's narratives during FMF
I will NOT subtweet you because THAT is personal & cowardly. Mental health is a societal reality. Families & ALL professions have it. We ALL need to be educated & awakened to its impact . That you think your industry must be exempt from scrunity because of it, is telling. Also
The ORIGINAL Reference List. The first list to be created & circulated online in 2016 naming "alleged" perpetrators of sexual and gender-based violence at RHODES UNIVERSITY.
Every single one of these men graduated and moved upwards unaffected.

An Ode - today is 7 years since the brave students of #RUReferenceList stood boldly against the 🟣 establishment's patriarchal violence and disrupted the status quo in demand for justice.

The rest of the story is how mass numbers of students mobilised online and within an hour a mass protest disrupted the university campus that evening. The colony was shaking for days to follow, and that's how the #RUReferenceList anti rape culture protests were borne.
Today marks 7 years since the #RUReferenceList protests that erupted at the 🟣 university in 2016. The 17th of April was a Sunday, and after meticulous strategy planning, we dropped the list online and it triggered a response from the victims that no one was ready for.
Simamkele Dlakavu, Gender Studies lecturer at UP, told of the Rhodes University Reference List and the activists who took a stand against management protecting perpetrators.
“Underreporting of GBV speaks to mistrust of universities.”#rureferencelist #antigbv #socialjusticehub

I remember my fondest memories of Mel Mboya .. she was my tutor for my module 'existential conversations' and after the #RUReferenceList protests Vuyo who was outed as a rapist was in my tutorial.. did I not raise the issue that we can't have him in our tut space and Mel --

6 years ago, my first year out of varsity, the #RUReferenceList came out and the protests began. It was during this time that I realised I was sexually assaulted in first year. Seeing everything unfold online brought that repressed memory to the fore.
