I grew up in a little town called Richmond across the river on the south side of Vancouver, BC. For decades it was a blue collar community- many of the residents there were fisherman or people who worked in canneries. We were home to the largest Japanese population outside of Japan. It was a safe haven for lower income families and single mothers (like my own). Most of the people across the river considered us "the country" and very few ever crossed the bridge into our town. In the mid 90's billions of Chinese dollars flooded into Richmond. Overnight the affordable family homes were torn down and replaced by mansions. In the summer of 1996 my neighborhood looked like a warzone. Virtually every home had been reduced to a pile of rubble- save for a few. Most of the renting families in my neighborhood were forced to move out, and the millionaires who moved in had absolutely no intention of being part of our community. During the next two decades this happened across the entire town. Affordable housing was replaced by mansions, patches of open land and forest were developed into condos, and the face of our once diverse community was completely altered. Today Richmond is a city. The average home is priced at over $1 million, most of the homes are empty and used to launder cash for Chinese millionaires and organized crime tied to the CCP, and rents for a 3 bedroom condo can exceed $3000 per month. Nearly everyone who grew up in that town have been displaced and the few who remain can barely afford to live there. This was one of many reasons why I moved my family to Alberta. BlackRock, Vanguard and State Street are following the Chinese model (and are more than likely funneling cash for the same CCP affiliated millionaires). The US and Canada will look like Richmond in the next few years if this continues. There will be no escape. Don't let your community turn into Richmond.
