Who’s excited to try out the awesome new Bouldering Park and Pump Track at Boyce Park? This outdoor recreational space is one-of-a-kind in southwestern PA and is unique even at the national level. It is one of the largest free outdoor bouldering wall sites in the country, offering over 6,000 square feet of climbing challenges. The paved pump track, at nearly 800 feet long, is the largest in the region. The sport of bouldering is a form of rock climbing typically performed at lower heights than rock climbing—the highest walls in Boyce are 15 feet tall. There are seven fabricated boulder walls with a range of designed climbing routes and levels of difficulty. The routes will be completely modified twice per year to offer ever-changing challenges to climbers! A pump track is a circuit of rollers and turns that can be ridden by riders “pumping” their bodies, generating momentum by up and down body movements. Typically used with bikes, the track can also accommodate scooters, skateboards, and even roller skates. Several pump tracks have been constructed throughout the region in recent years, but Boyce’s is by far the biggest. The project is intended for use by people of all ages and skill levels and even features a playground and a climbing boulder for young children. Seating and lush new landscaping are integrated throughout the site, including two rain gardens that will clean and filter stormwater runoff. A flush restroom will also be installed later this year.
