#KLSaigal was India's #AlarmClock ⏰,at exactly 7.57 every morning #RadioCeylon would play a 3-minute KL Saigal recording. Thanks to physical limits of #78RPM record the song ended exactly at 8.00 AM. For decades this voice became timekeeper for the entire subcontinent...!!! Kudos 👏 💐

Wow. Fascinating article.
Radio Ceylon celebrated it's 100th on December 16, 2025.
Why should it matter to India?
It's an interesting story ⤵️

Why should it matter to India?
It's an interesting story
In the early 1950s, India’s Minister for Information and Broadcasting, B.V. Keskar, banned Hindi film songs on All India Radio (AIR), labeling them too "vulgar" and "Westernized."
Radio Ceylon seized this moment. Using powerful shortwave transmitters left behind by the Allied Forces after WWII (Radio SEAC), they beamed Hindi film music directly into Indian homes.
The most famous radio program in history, Binaca Geetmala was launched on Radio Ceylon in 1952.
Ameen Sayani’s iconic greeting, "Behno aur Bhaiyo" (Sisters and Brothers), reached millions of Indian listeners every Wednesday.
To this day, the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) houses one of the world’s largest libraries of Hindi film music.
Fun Fact: When Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay were climbing Mount Everest in 1953, the only radio station they could clearly receive at the summit was Radio Ceylon!

There is no argument about @slbccolombo’s creditable history of 100 years. But does it have any future? For 67 of its 100 years, #RadioCeylon was a state monopoly. Once private broadcasting was allowed in 1992, grand old lady of Torrington Square just couldn’t compete despite legacy advantages. Audiences migrated fast. Abused by successive regimes for cheap political propaganda, SLBC is today a shadow of its former self. Like a crumbling old manor reduced to recalling good old days. #Radio100LK

It was very popular in #TamilNadu until the late 70s (and maybe the early 80s also).
Back then, its powerful shortwave transmitter reached most of Tamil Nadu. The rise of AIR's Vividh Bharati and internal issues slowed down #RadioCeylon's reach in Tamil Nadu, but the legacy endures even today.
The memory continues to live on in the form of many modern Tamil radio stations, apps, and online playlists evoking the "Radio Ceylon" style of classic film songs

📻 Celebrating 100 Years of SLBC (Radio Ceylon) 🇱🇰✨
On 16 December 1925, #SriLanka made history by launching Asia’s first radio broadcaster. What began as Colombo Radio later became Radio Ceylon, and today, the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation - a voice that has connected generations.
For millions in #India 🇮🇳 Radio Ceylon was more than radio. From the 1950s to the 1970s, families tuned in faithfully to hear #Hindi film songs, countdowns, and familiar voices that shaped everyday life. Iconic programmes like Binaca Geetmala, hosted by the legendary Ameen Sayani, became part of shared memories across borders.
A century on, SLBC remains a powerful symbol of the deep cultural bond between Sri Lanka and India, and of radio’s unique ability to unite people through sound, music, and stories.
🎉 Congratulations to SLBC on 100 remarkable years! 🙌

#RIPAmeenSayani (1932-2024): Interesting story of how an elitist/purist Indian Minister of broadcasting banned film music on All India Radio AIR in 1952, and drove a subcontinent of listeners to follow #RadioCeylon that stepped into the avoid with #BiancaGeetmala. #SouthAsia
