Direct #fossil #evidence regarding the #evolutionary #origin of #insects from #crustaceans has been investigated, and a new #species described. It has long been known that insects evolved from crustaceans. #Phylogenetic #reconstructions based on comparative studies of #extant species already support this #evolutionaryscenario. But what did #basalinsects look like? This is where #paleontology comes into play, as it can significantly help evolutionary biologists better understand the "direction of changes" (German: "#Lesrichtung"), that is, which traits emerged step-by-step along an #ancestrallineage and in what #order. Relatively few fossils were previously known regarding the evolution of early insects, which must have possessed more distinct crustacean-like characteristics. Authors E. Tihelka et al. (2026) described a fossil from the #TesnusFormation in #Texas (Late #Mississippian, approximately 324 million years ago) as a #newspecies, #Chosha #praecursor, establishing a new #genus for it. The animal exhibited a mosaic of ancestral #crustaceantraits and modern #insectcharacteristics. Overall, its body plan appears crab- or shrimp-like. This presumably amphibious early insect possessed leg-like #appendages on its abdomen, similar to crustaceans, several of which featured paddle-like extensions that served for swimming, respiration (as gills), or both. Insect-like features included, among others, three pairs of thoracal walking legs, a terminal filament, and an ovipositor. My AI-assisted reconstruction does not claim to depict the animal with precise anatomical accuracy; rather, it serves as an artistic illustration of what the animal might have looked like. My artistic illustrations are based on both previously published reconstructions and an image of the fossil itself. © #StefanFWirth, September 2026, Berlin please support my science communication efforts: ko-fi 👇 link in my first answer reference: E. Wirth, AI-assisted artistic reconstruction based on my hand-drawn storyboard sketches, manually edited: a three-dimensional reconstruction of an early insect inspired by *Chosha praecursor*; I emphasize that this is a purely artistic interpretation.

If you take a close look at our #reconstructions, you will discover a wealth of details! It goes without saying that weapons, tools & costumes are authentic. But we also pay attention to terrain reconstructions & plants. After all, the devil is in the #detail! #ArchIllu #heritage

Archaeological excavations provide the basis for #reconstructions. This short film is dedicated to the Roman Imperial Period cemetery of Nienbüttel &offers an insight into the burials of the Germanic people of the first centuries AD. https://t.co/jemkfiiAFS #ArchIllu #archaeology

Interesting study showing the evolution of amorphic precursors to #carbonate minerals using lab experiments. Seems like isotopic changes during mineral transformation can explain disequilibrium in some biogenic carbonates, foiling #climate #reconstructions https://t.co/ngLMhG3NhJ
