I’ve been experimenting with bringing #ReSTIR GI to the browser using #Rust, #WebAssembly, and #WebGPU.
ReSTIR GI, introduced by @NVIDIA Research, tackles one of real time path tracing’s hardest problems: efficiently sampling indirect illumination when only a small number of rays can be traced per pixel.
Instead of treating each pixel and frame independently, it resamples and reuses useful lighting paths across both space and time. The original paper reported substantial error reduction over conventional path tracing at only one sample per pixel.
My WebGPU implementation includes:
• Multi-bounce indirect illumination
• Temporal reservoir reuse
• Spatial reservoir reuse
• GPU BVH traversal
• Animated geometry and dynamic lights
• trous denoising
• ReSTIR DI and ReSTIR GI modes
• GPU profiling for each compute stage
The rendering pipeline is divided into primary ray generation, candidate and temporal sampling, spatial reuse, shading, denoising, and presentation passes.
The implementation runs directly in a modern browser, albeit at a lower frame rate and lower resolution, without requiring CUDA, RTX-specific APIs, or native installation.
