Clarifying metacognitive processes—habituation and dishabituation—that fuel metacognition’s “thinking about thinking:”
• Habituation is what makes thinkers tune out familiar experiences.
• Dishabituation snaps #rethinkers back again into noticing what’s important or valuable.

“Discomfort is where growth happens. If you’re constantly protecting yourself or your team from anything hard, you’re robbing them of resilience and stretching themselves to experience new things. Growth requires…the awkward, the uncertain, the hard.” —MS https://t.co/sDW91uskPL

The world’s #rethinkers—who focus on better ways and means to think alongside #AI—offer output of minds committed to lifetimes of curiosity, humility, and generosity. This era’s daily bombardment of lies scrambles engaged brains—and AI’s search algorithms. https://t.co/PH81XHyDWs

…and here it is, modelled by our very own co-founder Nathan Atkinson #letsRethinkFood #Rethinkers #PositiveConnnections

@RethinkFoodUK No way! Can’t believe we made it all the way there, thank you fellow Rethinkers 🤗
Yes, #FailureIsSuccess. @grok and a gaggle of #rethinkers agree:
“John R Dallas Jr redefines failure as a form of success, arguing that ‘successful failure’ involves learning from regret and rethinking strategies, aligning with developmental psychology principles that emphasize growth through setbacks, as supported by a 2013 @PsychToday article highlighting failure's role in building resilience.
• The post quotes an image from @readswithravi showing failure as a process (fall, acknowledge, investigate, learn, understand, realign, evolve), reinforcing Dallas's view that failure drives personal and initiative growth, a concept echoed in a 2011 @HarvardBiz study noting that some failures are inevitable and beneficial for learning.
• Dallas challenges the mainstream view of failure as merely a step toward success, instead framing it as ‘success itself’ only when its lessons are honored, a perspective that contrasts with common organizational resistance to failure, as the @Harvard study found many leaders struggle to learn from failures despite their value.” —#Grok3 (Analysis)

“Each year’s regrets are envelopes in which messages of hope are found for the New Year.” —John R. Dallas, Jr.
This reader-curated quote about regretting failures or shortfalls, culled from “We Need to Have a Word,” is the most frequently used for customized posters, graphics for posts, greeting cards, and other merchandise. @amazon, @Walmart, and other sellers sell it—without attribution or compensation to its author (as is frequently the case with plagiarism of quotes for profit).
Cut and paste the whole quote into a search window and then click on “Images.” You’ll value the way the message is used around the world, particularly in India.
In commencement addresses, speakers are more direct about the #HopeQuote’s recharacterization of life’s unavoidable and valuable failures.

Failure is success. It’s not part of success, it’s success—i.e., successful failure. Failure honored and harvested for its regret—and lessons for thinking to rethink—affirms the good of the person and the initiative. That’s the catch to this word play in developmental psychology.
It’s not only that we’re humbly trying to think deeper, wider, and higher about #System0Thinking—within which AI tools and humans “think” together—@JohnNosta, @denislabelle, and other #rethinkers are also aiming for breakthrough insights to achieve more clarity in our #thinking.
Don’t think it alone. If it’s worth #BestEffortThinking (BET)—for whatever “it” is—invite the BET of fellow #System2Thinkers and #AI’s chatbots. Use “metacollaborative” #System0Thinking. For metacognition, human #rethinkers are never alone! AI’s thinking guides are at our sides.

Consciously thinking about specific ways we humans are thinking is intentional—and effortful. To summon and strengthen our #BestEffortThinking, #PreDecisionMetacognition (#PDM) requires a momentary or longer pause to cognitively connect with our cognition. https://t.co/1Ot48ZYprt
Away from happiness @EnclaveAcademy moves #rethinkers about thinking.
“We don’t do #happiness,” is a quip.
Pursuit and identification of
#joy we encourage as a logical—and healthier—aim for engaged minds.
Joy frees and fuels minds to stay alert and oriented to life’s rhythms.
Happiness depends on the freedom to exit toxic relationships and enter healthy ones.

A vital form of liberty is the ability to choose the people in our lives.

In my freshman year at @duqedu, these questions were ritually repeated aloud in Journalism 101, as taught by the chairman of the Journalism Department. Over five decades later, with these core elements of #CriticalThinking, I encourage #rethinkers to ignite #metacognition skills.
Useful questions to ask when faced with a difficult situation.

#WeTheThinkers owe to the #IntellectualDiversity of #FoundingThinkers—from the late 1700s—the #FreedomToThink. Wee #Scotland’s bigger-than-big #rethinkers arguably had the greatest impact on the foundational thinking of the UST—“United States of Thinkers.”

High-performing #ThinkerDoers value Intellectual Diversity and Energetics Aligned—IDEA—@EnclaveAcademy’s IDEA for igniting insatiable curiosity of eager rethinkers. To be more resistant to #stupidity—metaphysics of #metacognition requires nurturing the #neuroserendipity of minds.

Garlands on heads of ancient thinking’s #rethinkers crown the importance of metacognition. Though #metacognition isn’t melodious enough to become a household word, its irritation is the mind’s ignition.
Liftoff for #HigherOrderThinking’s flights requires #System2Thinking’s fuel.

The “old rules of mastery don’t work anymore,” @thegrahamcooke generalizes below. The “ancient rules of metacognition” will always work, I theorize. Let’s all think deeper, wider, and higher about #HigherOrderThinking—to #ThinkAgain about low-to-high risks of #LowerOrderThinking.
It’s unwise of any modern scholar to limit to today’s cultural norms #Lincoln’s brilliance and its documented and suspected manifestations. His #rethinking informs today’s #rethinkers about #metacognition’s roles in psychological and emotional development. https://t.co/ZaubChdMNg

The Psychologist President @EnclaveAcademy calls #AbrahamLincoln. Scholars and fictionalizers may forever remain deeply fascinated by the 16th #ThinkerInChief’s thinking about #thinking. Able #AbeLincoln’s #metacognition skills are explored in countless works of fact and fiction.

Few deaths in 2024 saddened the world’s intellectually curious, humble, and generous #rethinkers deeper than the untimely loss of Dr. #DanielKahneman (1934-2024). Though he was a #psychologist, his @NobelPrize was for what @EnclaveAcademy calls, “The Economics of #Metacognition.”

#TheEightQuestions we recite and delineate at @enclave_center. To help us think against society’s headwinds of #LazyThinking, we use #EffortfulThinking lessons of @NobelPrize awardee Dr. #DanielKahneman (1934-2024). Rely on his #HigherOrderThinking’s preferable #System2Thinking.
Establish in your organization a #RethinkTank. Routinely schedule #rethinkers to share what they are methodically and messily #rethinking. Cognitive order from cognitive chaos yields the very types of breakthroughs, innovations, and disruptions needed by neighborhoods to nations.
The Advisory Committee serves as @UN_HRC “Think Tank.”
Its experts will discuss the impact of
•technology in the military domain
•disinformation
•technology-facilitated gender-based violence
•plastic pollution
•artificial intelligence

Schedule #thinkabouts—instead of meetings! With previously announced #thinkables, gather a #thinkabout to think things through thoroughly together (T5) with #cothinkers. Before each thinkabout, #rethinkers #digithink with an #AI chatbot to prime #System2Thinking’s #metacognition.

Difficult #ThinkingHurts. Neuroscientists report evidence of physical impact on the brain of #HigherOrderThinking’s pinpricks, taps, or punches of discomfort. Bear it. The gain’s worth it. “No brain pain, no mind gain,” #ThinkerDoer Enclavians smilingly intone at @EnclaveAcademy.

Lift higher your Earthly thinking. You and other agile #rethinkers are mentally stimulated—and challenged—imagining what it would be like to study on #Mars at #Musk Metaversity. Helmeted freshmen are still #learning to breathe the reconstituted lab-distilled air for indoor space.

#MentalModels in our heads are not unlike machines that use glue to hold things together. Time—and pollution in the air—cause adhesives to age, dry, crack, and disintegrate. Recent #election results continue to unglue #ThinkingModels, thinks @nytdavidbrooks and other #rethinkers.

“Many of us are walking around with broken #MentalModels. Many of us go through life with false assumptions about how the world works.” —@nytdavidbrooks
To #DavidBrooks’s ego-piercing questions below and others posed within this gift link, I answered “Yes!” to 100% of them, long before I saw his irritatingly insightful and painfully perplexing brilliant list.
Yes, 100%.
Q: “If the #Democrats nominated a woman to run for president, would you expect her to do better among female voters than the guy who ran in her place four years before?”
A: Yes. Wouldn’t you?
Q: “If the Democrats nominated a Black woman to run for president, would you expect her to do better among Black voters than the white candidate who ran in her place four years before?”
A: Yes. Wouldn’t you?
Q: “If the #Republicans nominated a guy who ran on mass deportation and consistently said horrible things about #Latino immigrants, would you expect him to do worse among Latino voters over time?”
A: Yes. Wouldn’t you?
Q: “If the Democrats nominated a vibrant Black woman who was the subject of a million brat memes, would you expect her to do better among #YoungVoters than the old white guy who ran before her?”
A: Yes. Wouldn’t you?
Wrong we were. Wronged we are.
With his formidable metacognitive learning, metacognitive knowledge, and metacognitive regulation, and his insatiable intellectual curiosity, comforting intellectual humility, and limitless intellectual generosity, Mr. Brooks moves us through the metaphysics of metacognition related to the darkly decisive election of the #ThinkerInChief-Elect.
Carefully read, please, excerpts from this “gift article” which respectfully I broke into bitesize sentences for thinkability:
“Why were so many of our expectations wrong?
…we all walk around with mental models of reality in our heads.
Our mental models help us make sense of the buzzing, blooming confusion of the world.
Our mental models help us anticipate what’s about to happen.
Our mental models guide us as we make decisions about how to get the results we want.”
And:
“Where did we get our current models?
…we get models from our experience, our peers, the educational system, the media, and popular culture.”
@AdamMGrant might say this article and my adapted recitation thereof—and red-faced confession thereto—call us to “climb down from Mt. Stupid.”
n.b., I did.
Many of us are now jumping off of Mt. Stupefied into a pool of thick goo (slime?) that cognitively cushions our falls. This sticky stuff won’t easily—if ever—wash off of the wounds we sustained from the near-fetal position #MoralInjury inflicted on our minds, bodies, hearts, and souls.
Please click to read in its entirety this interactive metacognition map David Brooks sketches for us. It will illuminate with warning alarms your mind’s dashboard.
Note well the flashing traffic arrows pointing us away from the dangerous cliffs, mud slides, and brushfires of Mt. Certainty. —JRDjr

In @EnclaveAcademy’s Book Nook, @AdamMGrant’s #ThinkAgain is offered (below cost) as a “think you gift” of thanks for contributing #IntellectualCuriosity—and $20—to our #microlearning community of #rethinkers.
Give to your #ThinkWorkers a holiday #ThinkYouGift of #DrAMG’s book.
Book Summary: “Think Again”

#LazyThinking is #EffortlessThinking to which even competent #System2Thinking #rethinkers can unconsciously accidentally default—at high-stakes fear-ridden decision-making moments. Using #AI tools indicates intentionality about thinking—i.e., metacognition ignition. Keep driving!
👉HYPOTHESIS: The insidious risk of high AI performance is that it can lull people into laziness or uninspired engagement, paradoxically leading to a decline in the quality of outcomes.
