This week in my literacy class we learned about phonics & the importance of understanding how to teach phonics to students. I never learned them because I spoke Spanish and read Spanish first. Decoding them is a struggle! Imagine for our kids? #READ5373
As a whole-language baby from the mid-80's-early-90's, phonics is BLOWING MY MIND! I feel like a word wizard!
So thankful for my Foundations of Reading class! It has really lived up to its name and I feel much more prepared to tackle kindergarten in the fall! #READ5373
I can't stress enough the significance of this statement! For decades, we have ignored research supporting automaticity in word recognition as an indispensable key to vocabulary growth and comprehension. Promote the science of reading to affect long-awaited change!

Reading is NOT a natural process. There is a science to teaching children to read. So, why aren’t more schools using the science? Don’t be the one who teaches using outdated methods. Do some research and teach effectively. https://t.co/vfnaL6DJBJ #READ5373
https://t.co/bTwwzhXTah Quick read on The Science of Teaching Reading. "It's not the teacher's fault--in too many cases the teacher was never shown how to teach reading properly." Teacher's need high-quality training & PD! You can't teach what you don't know. #READ5373
People argue "the effects of poverty and racism are so powerful we can’t expect education to overcome them." As a Latina student and teacher from an impoverished background, who overcame these challenges, I can proudly say education can do more than people think!#READ5373
On national tests last year, 18% of black 4th grade students
and 45% of white 4th graders were proficient. Research explains WHY our way of reading instruction isn’t working for so many black kids and others. Why is this science continually being ignored? #READ5373
Teacher instruction should be data driven. Data speaks, it tells us educators where to look when we help our students improve their literacy. #READ5373
We should be data informed; we must provide our students with literacy rich instruction and help them grow. We should not be motivating them with data; growth is necessary but we must ensure they are learning..not just for a test #READ5373 https://t.co/XDoAWJdQ2R

This week in my reading class I learned that 60-80% of all words in secondary literary text are morphologically complex WHAT?!? Yes! This is why Greek and Latin Roots are so important, students use them to decode and make meaning of these words! #READ5373
Learning to read & reading to learn are happening simultaneously. There needs to be a balance between phonics and knowledge. Focus on history, science, literature, & arts is important. It's easy to focus on assessable skills and overlook the internal reader. #READ5373
Morphological instruction enhances vocabulary development and reading comprehension. It includes teaching students about the morphological structures of words, meanings of roots and affixes and how to use morphological problem solving to figure out unknown words.
