Who’s ready to join me for a Summer Slow-Chat? 📘 During the months of July & August ‘23, I’ll be hosting a chat around this incredible book ~ Use my hashtag #ReadGrowTeachRepeat to follow along, share ideas, ask questions, reflect & grow 🌱

Parents ~ this evening’s tweets were in response to a professional chat centered on the book “Kids These Days” by @JodyCarrington #G2Great #teachersarelearnerstoo #ReadGrowTeachRepeat
Levels were intended 2 help Ts & not for Ss 2 use or Ts 2 plaster walls of schools & classrooms 4 all 2 see. A book does not carry a level w/in it. Books have characteristics that match where particular reader is @ any given moment in their life as a reader. #ReadGrowTeachRepeat
Lexile levels are an inappropriate formula to determine book levels. Please stop using them 2 level books in schools and classrooms. #ReadGrowTeachRepeat
I know I’m behind w/reading. Just read chaps 4 & 5 & have some thoughts I want 2 share. I’m unapologetic book owner. I know power that comes w/owning books. I want 2 advocate 4 my school PTA 2 budget $ so Ss get a book @ least once/yr. PTA has $. Thoughts?#ReadGrowTeachRepeat
So, I was thinking about how some Ts are given money by their schools or school boards to spend on books for independent reading and others are not. Nothing else I have to say about that at this moment. Just a noticing. Thoughts? #ReadGrowTeachRepeat
@DrLMaucione But now that we know better, we should be able to do better, right? How do we get this research, which makes sense to me intuitively, into the hands of administrators? #ReadGrowTeachRepeat
@MeetMissMagee @DrLMaucione @lauramossa This is a great idea, even for older kids. This could be part of their portfolio to share w/families. #ReadGrowTeachRepeat
@DrLMaucione This struck me too ~ are well intentioned efforts going in the wrong direction? #ReadGrowTeachRepeat
I love the @jenniferlagarde’s idea of reframing inventory questions for developing readers which will help Ts get to know Ss’ experiences & interest & ultimately lead Ss to books they want to read. #ReadGrowTeachRepeat #gamechanger
Interesting point from Game Changer (pg. 15) about the fact that there is evidence of the effectiveness of summer book distribution programs, but little evidence for summer school, yet summer school is a much more popular way of addressing summer slide. #ReadGrowTeachRepeat
@KymHarjes I ❤️ the idea! In our district, funds were provided to open school libraries for few times over the summer. Students could check out books, hear read alouds or booktalks, engage in Makerspace activities, etc. #ReadGrowTeachRepeat
@DrLMaucione @donalynbooks @colbysharp And, that’s my worry: with all good intentions. we might be inadvertently setting up a have/have not system when that is not our intention at all. #ReadGrowTeachRepeat
Differences in children’s attainment in schools has 2 do w/levels of poverty & not Ts’ failure 2 teach. Kids need multiple sources of books in their lives. If schools is 1 major place 4 access 2 books, we need 2 make it count. @donalynbooks @colbysharp #ReadGrowTeachRepeat
“Readers motivated for personal reasons are more likely to remain invested than readers who are externally motivated by rewards (Marinak & Gambrell, 2008). ~Game Changer @donalynbooks @colbysharp #ReadGrowTeachRepeat
Q1: Game Changer (Chapter 1, p. 15) ~ reading up on teacher Stacey Riedmiller’s program called “Books on Blankets” ~ What are your thoughts on organizing something like this in your communities? I’m inspired! #ReadGrowTeachRepeat
