I felt lost yesterday, bored, unmotivated. I read 5 chapters of my English quran.
I felt better. I can honestly say it is helping me through. #readingthequran

Now happily getting through a Surah each night before bed.

My #ReadingTheQuran thread is getting rather long.
So I'm setting up this thread to bookmark each separate thought (generally made up of a few tweets).
Whole thread starts below with an Intro - I explain which Quran version I'm reading and my motivation.
After reading some books on Early Islam, I've decided to re-read the Quran.
Will be sharing my thoughts on this thread, in case they're of interest to anyone else. #ReadingTheQuran
But if these long Surahs are different revelations put together, which seems more natural, then the order is even more random.
If the longest surahs are only longest because they contain multiple revelations, and the shortest are at the back because they don't.

Back on this after a break. #ReadingTheQuran.
For anyone familiar with the Bible the odd thing about the Quran is that its Surahs, or chapters, are not in any order of theme or chronology.
You get the shortest Surah, then the longest, then in descending order of length.
"They to whom We have given
The Book who study it as it
Should be studied"
"They who conceal God's revelations in the Book purchase for them a miserable profit"
"God sent down The Book In truth, but those who seek Causes of dispute in the Book are in schism"

The Prophet refers endlessly to 'The Book', 'The People of the Book', but tbh you could translate that as Bible, which is just the Greek word - Biblia - for Book.
And the Prophet calls on his audience, explicitly Jews, to remember episodes from Exodus. #ReadingTheQuran
One of the striking things about the Quran is how Biblical it is.
Whole passages are quotes or paraphrases from the Bible, both Old and New Testaments.
And that includes a really elevated view of both figures like Abraham and Moses, and Jesus and Mary.

Most Westerners approach the Bible as a sort of naive Protestant, largely ignoring the theological traditions that interpret it. Which approach makes even less sense relating to Islam.
But that's enough intro, future tweets will give my thoughts on the content. #ReadingTheQuran
