Katja: The Library Dog
Let's talk about dogs and people.
Instead of covering the data, which can be boring, I'm going to paint a picture, one dog at a time.
These stories are impossible to guard your heart against.
So if you feel misty eyed while reading, you are in good company.
Katja is a Chocolate English Labrador Retriever. She is trained to be a facilities service animal and certified within our province to go into public places.
Katja's role is to be present for children in Red Deer Public Libraries and to visit grade school children in classrooms.
She is trained to provide hugs and various amounts of pressure depending on what the child needs or is comfortable with.
Families can book reading time with Katja, to come and read to her one on one for short sessions and the library sends Katja and her human out to classrooms to do small group reading.
She is a very well trained dog.
That's the technical aspects. Here comes the heart.
Kids who are reluctant readers LIGHT up with Katja.
Dogs are non-judgemental companions, and the scariest thing about learning to read is sounding the words out and getting them wrong in front of peers.
Students who were fearful before become FEARLESS.
Why?
Phew. Are you ready?
The kids were asked.
They knew Katja didn't care if they got a word wrong.
They wanted to tell Katja the story.
They didn't want to let Katja down by not reading.
The library become not just a place were books are but where KATJA is.
It was where a friend was.
Parents/Guardians noticed that after a session with the library dog kids read more at home.
Kids read to their family members and pets.
If kids didn't have pets they read to their stuffed animals.
Kids who started out fearful of dogs warmed up to Katja and after a couple months went from not wanting to be around her to having her fall asleep on her their lap.
Not only were the KIDS affected pawsitively by Katja, the staff of the library was changed.
We spoke to the director of the program and she said Katja has pulled everyone together. Morale has never been better. The days when Katja comes in are the best days of the week. Staff want to TRANSFER to where Katja is stationed.
The data in DOZENS of studies backed this up with robust evidence.

Let's just say it was a GOOD day at the high school.
Ok that's wrong.
It was the BEST DAY.
Learning to read is probably the most critical skill that anyone can acquire.
Schools and teachers do amazing, heroic work.
Sometimes they just need a little help from a hero with four paws.
