England ended slavery on its shores before Captain Cook arrived on these shores- abolished it throughout the empire before Vancouver Island became a colony.
The massacres, slavery & human sacrifice endemic here continued after Vancouver Island joined BC.
The Cowichan, as part of the Coast Salish peoples, historically owned slaves captured through intertribal raids and warfare. A 1846 census recorded about 2,866 slaves among their population of roughly 9,427. This practice was widespread among Northwest Coast First Nations, where slaves served as laborers, status symbols, and were sometimes traded or sacrificed. Until the Europeans abolished slavery.
