𝐆𝐞𝐧-𝐙 𝐭𝐨 𝐑𝐮𝐭𝐨: 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐤𝐬, 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐧𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐤𝐬! William Ruto, the outgoing President of the Republic of Kenya has reportedly invited the youth of this country to a multi-sectoral conversation about the future of our country. The forum was formed unilaterally by Ruto without the input of key stakeholders, such as the media, academics, civil society, or the youth. It will be presided over by disgraced Ruto’s henchmen. This is a predictable playbook in Kenya: establish a commission to buy time and appeal for calm, and hope new crises emerge to detract from old ones. Kenyans need answers NOW, for questions that can’t wait, top among them, what soldiers are doing in our streets, for the first time in 42 years. Ruto has admitted that Gen-Z and millennials’ peaceful protests were hijacked by hired goons out to discredit the nascent youth movement. The next question would be what the National Intelligence Service is doing about it, but DP Rigathi Gachagua has already provided the answer: The NIS is dysfunctional, its only success being the abduction, disappearance and torture of innocent Kenyans agitating for change. We are still waiting for answers about those abductions, torture, and disappearances sanctioned by Ruto’s regime. We see the invitation from Ruto as a charade to identify, intimidate or even murder individuals seen as leaders of the movement. Thankfully, Gen-Z, millennials and Kenyans of all generations have good ideas about the future of this country, but that can only commence with Ruto out of office. He has lost all legitimacy. Even Parliament, where he consolidated power by buying out independent parties, has demonstrated its lack of independence by voting as directed by Ruto. Those MPs are now busy explaining themselves to Kenyans to avert the inevitable process of their recall. The Church says Gen-Z should accept Ruto’s overtures for dialogue. We reject the invitation for a few reasons. Mainstream Church has been complicit in Kenyans’ oppression through its silence, while evangelicals gave Ruto a platform to lie to Kenyans for years, and received donations stolen from Kenyans. The Bible says: “No one puts new wine into old wineskins; or else the new wine will burst the wineskins and be spilled, and the wineskins will be ruined.” (Luke 5: 37) Ruto represents the old, corrupt order that has been rejected by the citizens of this country. Gen-Z millennials and other citizens have their own vision of the future, but that excludes Ruto and his illegitimate, corrupt regime, whom we tell: Thanks, but no thanks! #RutoMustGo #RejectBudgetedCorruption
