Banyamulenge Global Advocacy (#BGA) firmly responds to the statements made by Dr. Freddy Kanyiki during his press conference in Goma on June 18, 2026.
First and foremost, #BGA #reminds the public that Dr. Freddy Kanyiki does not #represent the #Banyamulenge people or their aspirations. He is known as the political leader of the MRDP/Twirwaneho rebel movement. As such, he cannot legitimately claim to speak on behalf of the entire Banyamulenge community or present himself as its #spokesperson.
Dr. Kanyiki claims that the Banyamulenge have been #abandoned to #violence, #exclusion, and eventual #disappearance in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This assertion is simply false. Although the Banyamulenge are a minority community, they are represented within the institutions of the Republic. President Félix-Antoine #Tshisekedi's government includes His Excellency Alexis #Gisaro Muvunyi, Minister of State, while the National Assembly includes #Honorable Levis Rukema Makangura. Beyond these leaders, Dr. Kanyiki knows very well that the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) include numerous Banyamulenge generals, colonels, majors, captains, and other officers who have faithfully served their country. Some have even paid the ultimate price on the battlefield while defending the territorial integrity of the DRC against Rwanda's aggression. These realities directly contradict the narrative of exclusion that Dr. Kanyiki seeks to promote.
It is deeply regrettable to witness a son of the Banyamulenge community place himself in the service of the Kigali regime and become a vehicle for its propaganda. Through Dr. Kanyiki's efforts, Rwanda was able to recruit Banyamulenge youth living as #refugees in Kenya, Uganda, and Burundi. This facilitated the diversion of Twirwaneho from its original mission as a community self-defense initiative and its transformation into MRDP, a Rwanda-backed proxy movement operating alongside AFC/M23. As a reward for his role in this process, Dr. Kanyiki was elevated to the position of Deputy Coordinator of AFC/M23. BGA draws the attention of the United Nations and the international community to the existence of recruitment networks targeting Banyamulenge youth in refugee camps across these countries.
Even more concerning is the fact that Dr. Kanyiki transformed Twirwaneho from a community self-defense initiative into an ally of #RED-Tabara, an armed group whose actions have directly contributed to violence against the very Banyamulenge population Twirwaneho was originally created to protect. Since 2017, RED-Tabara's attacks and operations have brought immense suffering, displacement, and loss to Banyamulenge families. Rather than condemning those responsible for these atrocities and standing firmly with his community, Dr. Kanyiki chose to align his MRDP with forces whose actions have deepened the insecurity and suffering of Banyamulenge civilians.
Today, Dr. Kanyiki appears before the media attempting to defend the Kigali regime and divert attention from its role in the #ongoing #aggression against the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In doing so, he seeks to obscure the responsibility of #Rwanda and its #proxies for the suffering endured by civilians in #Minembwe and throughout the High Plateaux.
By pledging allegiance to Kigali, Dr. Kanyiki has unfortunately joined the long list of individuals who have chosen to serve the interests of Paul Kagame's regime rather than those of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Banyamulenge people. Like Moïse #Nyarugabo and #Azarias Ruberwa before him, he now appears as a political actor whose discourse consistently aligns with Kigali's strategic objectives and whose role has become that of justifying, concealing, and legitimizing Rwanda's aggression against the DRC.
BGA also wishes to remind the public of a fundamental truth: neither MRDP/Twirwaneho nor the Kigali regime provides security for Banyamulenge living in Uvira, Bibokoboko, Kalemie, Lubumbashi, Kinshasa, or many other parts of the country. Thousands of Banyamulenge live peacefully alongside their fellow Congolese citizens throughout the DRC. Those who continue to suffer are primarily the populations of Minembwe and the High Plateaux, who remain trapped in a cycle of conflict sustained by MRDP/Twirwaneho, #AFC/M23, RDF, RED-Tabara, and other armed groups allied with or acting as proxies for Rwanda. Dr. #Kanyiki and his movement bear a significant responsibility in perpetuating this tragic situation. BGA also notes the reported support provided by networks associated with Mahoro Peace Association, which has been identified by many observers as a key source of political and financial backing for this movement.
The #Banyamulenge, like the Congolese people as a whole, have long understood that #MRDP/Twirwaneho has become an instrument serving Rwanda's geopolitical interests. Under the pretext of defending a community, this rebel movement has instead contributed to the isolation, stigmatization, and hostage-taking of the Banyamulenge while providing political and military cover for foreign aggression against the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
BGA further notes that Dr. Freddy Kanyiki is an #American #citizen who has chosen to place his political influence at the service of the Kigali regime and its destabilization agenda in eastern DRC. He is an American citizen holding a senior leadership position within a rebellion that continues to fuel instability, violence, and mass displacement in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. Such a position stands in direct contradiction to #U.S law and to ongoing efforts aimed at restoring peace, regional stability, and respect for the sovereignty of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, including the commitments reflected in the #Washington #Peace #Accord under the leadership of His Excellency President Donald J. Trump.
BGA firmly reaffirms that the future of the Banyamulenge people lies within a united, sovereign, and peaceful Democratic Republic of the Congo—not in military adventures, recurring rebellions, or agendas imposed from Kigali.
The Banyamulenge are Congolese citizens, not instruments of war. BGA strongly condemns any attempt—including by Dr. Freddy #Kanyiki, Moïse #Nyarugabo, or any other actor—to #instrumentalize the #Banyamulenge as political tools, human shields, or pretexts to justify #Rwanda's aggression against our homeland, the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Lasting peace, the restoration of national sovereignty, and the protection of civilian populations must remain the highest priorities for all those genuinely committed to the future of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and all its people.
