The hypocrisy from the right is, sadly, not shocking, but outrageous nonetheless. Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old VA ICU nurse, has been falsely characterized as a “lunatic” who “wanted to do maximum damage and massacre law enforcement” after he was murdered while attempting to assist a woman who had been shoved to the ground by a masked ICE agent. The DHS and other GOP officials have used much of the same language to describe Renee Good, a 37-year-old mother of three, who been accused of being a “domestic terrorist.” Many of the same folks who are smearing Pretti and Good posthumously, following their extra-judicial execution, previously lionized Kyle Rittenhouse, a 17-year-old, who shot three men with an AR-15 in Kenosha, Wisconsin, killing two, amid protests following the police shooting of Jacob Blake. Trump was an immediate, ardent supporter of Rittenhouse. "If you're talking about innocence based on self-defense, this was the poster boy," Trump declared, calling the teenager “brave.” This is what Trump had to say after Rittenhouse visited him at Mar-a-Lago. “Really, a nice young man. What he went through — he should’ve, that was prosecutorial misconduct. He should not have had to suffer through a trial for that.” J.D. Vance tweeted, in defense of Rittenhouse, "Our leaders abandoned this kid's community to lawless thug rioters, and he did something about it." Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said that Rittenhouse "did what we should want citizens to do in such a situation: step forward to defend the community." Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-N.C.) offered Rittenhouse an internship and told his followers to "be armed, be dangerous.” Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) said he wanted Rittenhouse to join his staff as well. Rep. Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.) challenged Gaetz to an arm-wrestling session for the right to hire Rittenhouse. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) wrote that "Kyle is one of the good ones." Republican Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky defended Rittenhouse, arguing: "He also exhibited incredible restraint and presence and situational awareness.” Tucker Carlson called Rittenhouse "exactly the kind of person you would want many more of in your country." Sean Hannity claimed: “This is what happens when powerful people in the media, in Washington, in the swamp … rush to judgment. And sadly, it happens every single time over and over again [with] the same cast of characters. The media mob … get it wrong and innocent people … pay the price.”
