Despite the grandiose promises made by former First Minister @NicolaSturgeon for a substantial expansion in addiction recovery services, the reality—a mere increase of 32 operational rehab beds in three years—is an insult to Scots battling alcohol & other drug addiction. The revelation by @heraldscotland of the abysmal increase in residential rehabilitation beds in Scotland is nothing short of a scandalous betrayal of trust and a glaring failure of policy. This pitiful progress, set against the backdrop of a £100 million investment commitment, is a stark illustration of a system that is failing its most vulnerable. The discrepancy between the ambitious targets set in 2021 and the ground realities today not only showcases incompetence but also a dangerous negligence of the escalating crisis in our communities. The closure of Turning Point 218 in Glasgow—a lifeline for women grappling with addiction —amidst this so-called expansion highlights the absurdity of the government's approach. It's unconscionable that half of the Alcohol and Drug Partnerships (ADPs) report no rehab beds in their area, a clear sign that the crisis is being grossly mishandled. How many more facilities must shut their doors, and how many more lives lost, before the gravity of the situation is acknowledged? What's more infuriating is the Scottish Government's boastful claim of record investment in ADPs, while the actual outcome of such funding is dismal. The government's slow pace and mismanagement in rolling out these critical services is unacceptable. The fact that only a fraction of the planned beds are operational, and the specific allocation of these resources remains unclear, speaks volumes of the misdirected priorities and inefficiency at play. The government's narrative of progress is a facade that crumbles under scrutiny, revealing a distressing lack of commitment to addressing alcohol & other drug misuse with the seriousness it deserves. The disproportionate emphasis on drug addiction, to the detriment of alcohol recovery services, not only reflects a misguided policy approach but also perpetuates the stigma and neglect surrounding alcohol dependency. This situation is untenable and demands more than just incremental changes or hollow promises. It calls for a robust, immediate, and transparent re-evaluation of how addiction recovery services are funded, implemented, and prioritised in Scotland. The government must be held accountable for its failures and forced to take decisive action to rectify this gross injustice. The Scottish people deserve better than empty pledges and bureaucratic inertia. They deserve a system that supports, heals, and uplifts every individual battling addiction. Anything less is a dereliction of duty that cannot, and should not, be tolerated.
