A warm reception in Addis! The Royal Norwegian Embassy hosted the electric #RoadToAddis convoy with industry leaders, diplomats & innovators pushing Africa’s e-mobility future forward.
📍At the residence of H.E. @NorwayinAddis , Norwegian Ambassador to Ethiopia

The Kabisa Workhorses.
Part of the #RoadtoAddis convoy has been an e-pickup and an e-truck from @KabisaElectric, two machines that have carried their weight and then some.
The e-pickup has led the charge from the front, mainly handling logistics. It’s the Geely Radar RD6; a refined drive with excellent power delivery and surprising comfort off-road. It has a 65 kWh battery, delivering roughly 320 km on a full charge.
The truck has brought up the rear, carrying, for example, extra batteries for the two e-motorcycles. It’s the GeelyH9E Light Truck, a 5-tonne refrigerated vehicle with a 132 kWh battery that delivers about 320 km on a full charge. Practical and steady over long distances, it’s well suited for transport and logistics, especially for moving perishables.
The truck is driven by Christian Byiringiro, who is a driver at Kabisa, and based in Rwanda. He says e-mobility has gained much traction in the country over the last few years.
Christian drove the pickup from Kigali, Rwanda, leaving on Sunday, 28 September, and arriving in Nairobi on Wednesday, 1 October. This was his second drive from Kigali to Nairobi, the first being during Kabisa’s participation in Kenya Power’s 3rd E-Mobility Stakeholders Conference and Expo, held in May 2025 at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre.
He notes that drive was smooth thanks to the wider network of chargers in Rwanda and Uganda. He describes the Road to Addis as incredible and appreciates Kenya Power’s support in charging the e-convoy on the Kenyan side.
With him in the e-truck is Peter Kariuki, Charging Operations Assistant, Kabisa.
He calls the trip fantastic, insightful, and worth every kilometre. Through the Road to Addis, he’s seen how different utilities are working together to make e-mobility seamless with the necessary power access, grid stability, and the technical skill to back it all.
Kabisa, established in 2020, operates across East Africa and is developing an EV Highway linking Rwanda, Uganda, and Kenya to make cross-border electric transit easier. It has a wide range of products suitable for the Eastern African e-mobility market including trucks, pickups, SUVs, minibus, minivans, and prime movers. It offers complimentary services, both in-house and on the road, to all of its customers.
For Kabisa, this journey is not just about reaching Addis. It’s about proving that an electric future for East Africa is already within reach.

Yesterday was Day 9 of #RoadtoAddis. The finish line to Addis Ababa.
1605 hrs: We finally did it! 🎉
The #RoadtoAddis has reached its destination, Addis Ababa, and we couldn’t be prouder.
We set out to prove that electric vehicles, long-haul trucks, and motorcycles can go the distance, and we’ve done exactly that. More than that, we’ve shown that Eastern Africa is ready for the electric transition.
The day began at Adama Windmill Power Plant 1, where we had a photoshoot and a briefing with some of the partners who made this historic odyssey possible.
Among those present were representatives from Kenya Power, Ethiopia Electric Utility, Kabisa, Munja, Roam, Spiro, the Ethiopian State Ministry of Transport and Logistics, Hyatt Regency Addis Ababa, the Norwegian Embassy, AEW, Kühne, UNEP, Dodai, Lion Green, NICE and Taxi Me, and UN-Habitat.
In Addis Ababa, the team was received at the Hyatt Regency, where a press conference followed. Keynote remarks came from Dr. Alemu Sime, State Minister for Transport and Logistics, Ethiopia; and H.E. Stian Christensen, Ambassador of Norway to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union.
The celebrations closed with a panel discussion on e-mobility in Eastern Africa, featuring representatives from Kühne, Hyatt Regency, Kabisa, Munja, and Eazy Power. It was a fitting conversation to mark the end of a journey that began as a test and ended as proof of what’s possible.

It's day 8 of the #RoadtoAddis, a pause before the finish
It’s now exactly one week since the Road to Addis e-convoy rolled out from Uhuru Park, Nairobi.
With Addis Ababa finally within reach, today is a chance for the Road to Addis 10 to slow down, take stock, and appreciate what has been a remarkable and historic cross-country journey.
As we take the day to soak in the sights and sounds of Ethiopia, our thoughts also turn to the vehicles and motorcycles that have carried us this far. The journey has been unexpectedly smooth, despite the varied terrain. Not a single vehicle or motorcycle has broken down, a quiet testament to the craftsmanship of modern e-vehicles. Across rugged hills, scorching plains, and rainy stretches, they have delivered consistently, handling heavy loads and keeping pace.
With fewer moving parts than their petrol or diesel counterparts, there are fewer components to fail, which means lower maintenance and repair demands. Further, their batteries handle repeated charges without significant loss of range, and regenerative braking helps extend efficiency, making them exceptionally suited for a journey like the Road to Addis.
Tomorrow, the #RoadtoAddis 10 will reach the culmination of our epic journey: the grand entry into Addis Ababa. #AEW2025 #PoweringEMobilityKE #TheFutureIsElectric #PoweringKenya ^KN

1/3 #RoadtoAddis e-convoy includes two motorcycles and two remarkable riders.
Michael Githuka, Technical Team Lead at ROAM Electric Ltd, Nairobi, joined the expedition out of his passion for long-distance rides and to prove that @roamelectric's motorcycles can match endurance with innovation. He’s astride the @roamelectric Air Gen 2, a locally-manufactured electric bike built for performance and resilience.
Edwin Shomba, Technical Team Lead at Africa Smart Mobility Solutions (@SPIROEVs), Nairobi, took on the challenge for both professional and personal reasons: to demonstrate the long-range capability of e-motorcycles and to take pride in a cross-border journey that puts @SPIROEVs's workmanship on display. He’s riding the Spiro M1, a machine that has drawn admiration at every stop.

It's day 7 of #RoadtoAddis, the science of the stop.
1134 hrs: Setting up for a top-up charge at the Ethiopian Electric Utility premises in Hawassa, Sidama Region. We're now just 270 kilometres from Addis Ababa, with Ziway as our next stop.
Charging has been as much a part of this journey as movement itself. Every pause has been a chance to refuel and recalibrate. Along the way, we've come to appreciate the two faces of electric charging: AC and DC.
Alternate Current (AC) charging takes longer but demands little in terms of infrastructure. It's ideal for domestic use and, more importantly, kinder to the battery over time.
Direct Current (DC), on the other hand, delivers power much faster, making it perfect for vehicles in transit and commercial operations. Each mode plays its role in the rhythm of electric travel: one for patience, the other for pace.
Every stop on the Road to Addis reminds us that the journey isn't just about covering distance. The cross-border journey has been focused on mastering the balance between speed and moving deliberately towards what lies ahead. #PoweringEMobilityKE #TheFutureIsElectric #PoweringKenya #AEW2025 ^KN

Meet Ian Kipruto Kurgat, our #eMobility Engineer, who is overseeing the charging infrastructure for the Kenyan leg of the #RoadtoAddis. Ian leads the #eMobility Section, a new unit within the Transport Department that champions electric transport and develops practical solutions to support its growth.
For Ian, the #RoadtoAddis is not just a test of endurance; it’s also a proof of concept. The journey demonstrates the reliability of electric vehicles and motorcycles across long distances while spotlighting the technology powering this transition. Most importantly, it places Kenya Power front and centre in the conversation on #eMobility within the Eastern Africa region. #PoweringEMobilityKE #TheFutureIsElectric #PoweringKenya #AEW2025 ^KN

Yesterday, day 6 of #RoadtoAddis, time Travel and Green Hills
1738 hrs: A pause for top-up charging in Dilla.
It might be 10 October 2025 in the rest of the world, but here in Ethiopia, it’s 2 Tikimt 2018, a reminder that this journey crosses not only borders but calendars. And so, we press on with the Road to Addis.
After a late night of charging and planning, the team allowed for a slower start. This was a much-needed pause to regroup and recharge, both literally and figuratively. Once on the road, the 211-kilometre stretch from Yabello to Dilla unfolded in sweeping, green waves. The air grew cooler, the landscape softer. But with the climbs came heavier energy use; the rolling hills demanded more from the vehicles and motorcycles than the flatlands behind us.
Midway through, rain forced an unscheduled stop. With two motorcycles in the convoy, it was safer to wait it out than risk the slick tarmac. The delay added to the day’s length, but the pause brought a rare quiet, the kind that settles in only when the road decides to slow you down.
Still, the hum of the electric convoy through this lush heartland is a symbolic rhythm of persistence, each kilometre closer to Addis.

Day 5 of #RoadtoAddis: Passing the Baton
1051 hrs: After a hearty breakfast of shiro and anjera, we made our way to the Moyale Customs Holding Area in Tilemado, our first charging stop on Ethiopian soil. This session, and all those ahead, are being facilitated by the Ethiopian Electric Utility (EEU), to whom Kenya Power has officially passed the baton. The collaboration marks a smooth handover of power and purpose as the convoy continues its electric ascent toward Addis Ababa.
Our trusty electric steed for the Road to Addis, the JAC T8 EV Double Cab, is a sturdy electric workhorse built for endurance. Its 65 kWh battery delivers up to 300 km on a full charge, while its fast-charging capability of 50 kW can add more than 100 km of range in just half an hour. Beneath its quiet hum lies real muscle: the JAC T8 EV can easily haul several tonnes.
It’s one of 11 electric vehicles in the Company’s growing e-fleet, including 35 motorcycles and 3 forklifts. Together, they’re rewriting what efficiency looks like, running at an average cost of about KSh 4 per kilometre.
As the fleet grows, so does the vision. The Company is now rolling out charging infrastructure nationwide, with Nyeri set as the next stop, a move designed to power its operations and the town’s matatu sector, which is steadily embracing electric mobility. #PoweringEMobilityKE #TheFutureIsElectric #PoweringKenya #eMobility #AEW2025 ^KN

5/6The #RoadtoAddis team, eight Kenyans, one Rwandese, and one Chilean, waited patiently as clearance wrapped up. Two of the convoy vehicles, the e-truck and e-pickup from Kabisa, are Rwandan-registered, adding to the mix of stories and nationalities on this historic drive.

3/6We’ve now logged about 878 kilometres on the Kenyan leg of the #RoadtoAddis. At roughly KSh 4 per kilometre, that’s about KSh 3,512 in energy costs, barely a dent compared to the KSh 21,950 it would take a petrol engine to cover the same ground.
