"Some lessons can't be taught, Elektra. They must be lived to be understood."
Jennifer Garner might owe a debt of gratitude to the critically panned Catwoman, as its sheer awfulness might have spared #RobBowman's film, Elektra, from being labelled the worst comic book adaptation of the mid-2000s. While Elektra doesn't quite reach the lows of Halle Berry's infamous role, it still falls flat due to its nobody-could-give-a-fuck execution. However, I have a lot of respect for Garner. Not only did she star in the first Marvel movie featuring a female lead, but she has also openly admitted that Elektra was terrible and that she only took the role because of contractual obligations from Daredevil (2003).
In this Daredevil spin-off, Elektra is resurrected and now works as a detached assassin. Her latest mission takes an unexpected turn when she's assigned to kill Mark Miller (Goran Visnjic) and his daughter Abby (Kirsten Prout), awakening her dormant maternal instincts. This twist sets her on the run from the sinister organization known as The Hand, which sends a series of quirky villains after them.
Garner's portrayal of Elektra is so emotionally distant that it's difficult to connect with her character's internal struggles. The film's frequent flashbacks to her traumatic past lack subtlety and quickly become repetitive. The story's heavy-handedness is further emphasised when Abby starts mirroring Elektra's appearance, a transformation that feels forced and contrived.
Despite Garner's stoic performance, Abby's attempts at spunk come off more as petulance, and while Visnjic effectively broods, his character adds little depth to the story. The villains, with names like Poison Ivy and Tattoo, are thinly developed, leading to a climax that's more about flashy visuals than meaningful substance. Each fight scene seems more focused on showcasing wind effects than actual combat. In the end, Elektra delivers a forgettable and mechanically executed comic book film experience.
