Sometimes when I want to turn my mind elsewhere I open #RobertAlter’s lovingly edited collection of poems by #YehudaAmichai, given to me by a thoughtful friend before my first visit to Israel. #MyFather (page16) #FirstYahrzeit (p346) #HalfThePeopleInTheWorld (p32) @fsgbooks

My favorite way to discover new books: from other great books. Reading through #RobertAlter led me to #EverettFox (who is better than Alter) & now reading through Fox, I was led to #MartinBuber I wonder who Buber will lead me to?

Mikaela listening to #RobertAlter’s translation of the Prophet #Ezekiel. She found some of the translation fresh and elegant, but she said she still prefers the NASB.

#RobertAlter will never admit prophecies have been fulfilled, but he couldn’t help admit #Isaiah’s glorious vision of the good news of YHWH’s universal dominion proclaimed to the nations was being accomplished by Paul & the early Christians…and continues to be fulfilled today.

Reading through #RobertAlter’s translation of the OT led me to this work by #EverettFox. I doubt it will be as good as Alter’s, but looking forward to diving in. This is the OT and NT (New English Bible from #CHDodd) that I will be reading through in 2022 Jan 1 is coming fast!

#RobertAlter refers to Job’s desire for a mediator who can put one hand on God & one hand on man as an “impossible fantasy” Only in #Christ do “impossible fantasies” come true! “For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God & men, the man Christ Jesus” (1Tim 2:5)

Amen (and awomen) to that! This is also true of too many modern NT commentaries. You need to read the old to learn anything fresh and new. #RobertAlter

The book of these days: “The Art of Bible Translation” (Robert Alter). I’ve read a few pages so far and I am already surprised by the subtle arrogance of the author, he is brilliant, but... wow! #robertalter #theartofbibletranslation #bookoftheweek
