State run NIMS Completes 1,000 Robotic Surgeries in 3 years
The Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (#NIMS ), #Hyderabad , has completed 1,000 #RoboticSurgeries in less than three years since launching its robotic surgery programme, with more than 90% of the procedures performed free of cost under the Aarogyasri and Chief Minister's Relief Fund (CMRF) schemes.
According to NIMS, the surgeries included 590 procedures by the Urology Department, 248 by the Surgical Gastroenterology Department and 162 by the Surgical Oncology Department. The operations covered complex conditions involving the prostate, urinary bladder, kidney, liver, pancreas, intestines, uterus and ovaries, including several cancer surgeries.
NIMS Director Prof. Dr Rahul Devaraj said the institute had made advanced robotic surgery accessible to common people through government-funded healthcare schemes. He credited the achievement to the combined efforts of surgeons, anaesthesiologists, nursing staff, operation theatre teams and other supporting departments.
Health Minister Damodar Rajanarasimha congratulated the NIMS team on achieving the milestone. He said the institute's completion of 2,000 kidney transplant surgeries recently, followed by 1,000 robotic surgeries, reflects the growing capabilities of Telangana's public healthcare system.
The minister said NIMS had earlier performed South India's first robotic kidney transplant in the government sector and has emerged as one of the country's leading organ transplant centres.
He added that the state government is expanding robotic surgery services across public hospitals. Besides NIMS, robotic surgeries are being conducted at MNJ Cancer Hospital, while advanced robotic operation theatres are planned for the upcoming TIMS hospitals, Gandhi Hospital and the new Osmania General Hospital.
Dr Rahul Devaraj said making over 90% of robotic surgeries free through Aarogyasri and CMRF had enabled economically weaker patients to access expensive, technology-driven surgical care that would otherwise be unaffordable. He said NIMS remains committed to expanding access to advanced treatment for poor and middle-class patients.
