#Treefungi: They invade other organisms (#trees) as #parasites, but are also #parasitized themselves and can be a #habitat for various organisms such as #mites and #nematodes. #Phaeolus #spadiceus (Agaricomycetes, #Polyporales) is a common #rootparasite in Europe, which occurs mainly on #coniferous trees and especially in #pine #forests, where it can cause significant damage to trees. P. spadiceus has the damaging effect on the tree #hosts by getting into the #heartwood of the lower tree trunks via the roots and causing the wood attacked there to turn brown (#dryrot) until the wood crumbles into cubes. The #fruitingbodies grow on the ground and can be found in a wide variety of soils and forest communities. However, higher #nitrogen loadings are preferred. The young fruit bodies appear in the summer months until September. #Spore maturity only begins when the summer heat has passed and temperatures are permanently below 15°C. The #mycelium of the fungus can be viable for up to six years, during which time new fruiting bodies can continue to form. The fruiting bodies can provide habitat for numerous species of #insects, such as #Carabidae and #Staphilinidae beetles. Dying fruiting bodies are colonized as well as living fruiting bodies, since the latter provide organic nutrients, for example in the form of spores, while the former is a good food source for bacteria feeders and #saprobionts. But not only insects colonize the fruiting bodies of tree fungi, but also mites, nematodes or molds. Since the fruiting body creates living conditions in habitats that appear only over a limited time period, especially in the stadium of its decomposition, one speaks of #ephemeral habitats. Such habitats are particularly attractive to #phoretic mites and nematodes transported by the insects living in fungal fruiting bodies.
