Was I bumped into time travelers? #China #ChinaTravel #Xizang #Route318
These hikers on China’s Route 318 hiking across Xizang are inspired by Journey to the West, a classic Chinese novel about a monk's pilgrimage to India, joined by a monkey, a pig, a river demon, and a dragon taking the form of a white horse, overcoming demons and trials.

Perched atop the Red Hill in northwest Lhasa, the grand #architecture dubbed as the "holy palace of the plateau" features a combination of palace, castle and temple elements. Located at 3,750m above sea level, it is recognized as a world #culturalheritage site. The palace has 13 stories with a total of 999 rooms, soaring up into the sky for 115m.
The Potala Palace was built by Tibetan King Songtsa Gambo in the 7th century and was expanded in the 17th century. It is a true #wonder for its location, structure and the significance in Tibetan #history and #religion.

Originally built in AD 647, the Jokhang Temple (大昭寺) nestled in the heart of Lhasa is an early #Buddhist temple of the #Tubo Dynasty. The name "Jokhang" means "House of Buddha" in the Tibetan language.
𝗧𝗵𝗲 '𝗦𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗵':

Hey folks! Today we're taking on the Lhasa-Nyingchi highway, which is part of the Route 318 and known as one of the most spectacular drives in the world. Our destination is #Lhasa, the capital city of #Tibet.
'𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗚𝗼𝗱𝘀':
Located on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, Lhasa is one of the highest cities in the world at an average altitude of about 3,650m. It is literally named the "place of gods" in the local language. Lhasa has a plateau monsoon climate with cool summers and cold winters, and the temperature differs greatly between day and night with strong UV. Do remember to pack your heavy coats and proper sunscreen protection.
𝗚𝗲𝗺-𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀:
While there, we're going to check out some of the must-see spots. Hidden in mountains, Basongcuo (or Basom Tso Lake巴松措) is a beauty to behold. With a length of 18km and an altitude of 3,480m, it is the one of the largest freshwater lakes in eastern Tibet and the lowest one in the whole region.
Niyang River (尼洋河), literally "the sorrowful tears of a fairy" in the Tibetan language, is a major river in southwest Tibet and the longest tributary of the Yarlung Tsangpo Valley. It stretches 307.5km from the west of Mira Mountain (米拉山), with an elevation of 5,000m above sea level. Flowing eastward, it joins Yalung Tsangpo in Cemeng, Nyingchi.
Mira Mountain forms a watershed between Lhasa River and Niyang River. If you drive from Lhasa River valley and climb all the way up over the Mira Mountain, you will enter the valley of Niyang River.
𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁:
🌊 Chill by Basom Tso Lake
🌄 Take in the views of mountains and rivers from Myra Pass (米拉山口)
🚶 Enjoy picturesque scenery along the crystal-clear Niyang River and Kading Valley
🍺 Grab a dozen Lhasa Beer and enjoy late summer days

From Bomi to #Nyingchi, we will cross cable-stayed #Tongmai Bridge, a vital pass on the southern route of #Sichuan-#Tibet Highway. The completion of the bridge has reopened Route 318, once blocked by landslides.
Into the Green Wonderland:
Bordered by #Lhasa to the west, Nyingchi in southeastern Tibet has an average height of 3,000m with idyllic scenery. Almost 60% of Tibet's forests can be found here.
Located in Lulang Town, the north of Bayi Town in Nyingchi, Lulang Forest (鲁朗林海) is a massive picturesque #forest home to Chinese #spruce, #pinewoods and other tree species. Park the car and dive right into the scenic zone or hop onto the viewing platform for a closer look. Or you can just gaze out from you car window as you cruise down Route 318.
Chasing Rare beauty:
Sejila Mountain Pass (色季拉山口) located on the southeast side of #Bayi Town is a perfect spot to admire the magnificent 7,787m-high Namcha Barwa Peak (南迦巴瓦峰), the highest peak in Nyingchi. Its huge triangular pinnacle covered with snow is shrouded by clouds and mist almost throughout the year. We will be "extremely lucky" if it decides to show the rarely-seen beauty.
Tucked inside the Great Bend of Yarlung Tsangpo River (雅鲁藏布江), Namcha Barwa stands solitary just east of Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon (雅鲁藏布大峡谷), the world's largest and deepest river canyon. Together, they conjure a stunning panorama of mountain, river and canyon, a symphony of untouched wilderness.
Our checklist:
🚶♂️Visit Lulang Town to enjoy a pastoral life surrounded by snow mountains and vast forests
🦯Explore the mysterious Galang Palace Ruins, royal architecture during the Tubo Dynasty
🚗 Drive thru Sejila Mountain Pass to gaze at the grand Namcha Barwa Peak bathed in sunset

Crossing the Jinshajiang Bridge that links #Batang in #Sichuan Province to Mangkang County in #Tibet, we officially step foot on the land of Tibet. Our journey brings us face-to-face with #Zongbala Mountain (宗巴拉山), also known as Zongla Mountain, standing tall at an altitude of 4,150m – the first mountain to greet us in Tibet.
As we navigate the winding roads to #Mangkang County (芒康县) at an average altitude of 3,500m, a sense of desolation permeates the landscape. Steep mountains and sparse grassland paints a scene quite different from the lush river-grass scenery of western Sichuan.
At 4,338m high, Lawu Mountain (拉乌山) is a gentle mountain pass in Mangkang. Unlike other meadow mountains, it features a sporadic green hue on the range which can be seen from afar.
𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗿𝘆-𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝘀𝗮𝗹𝘁 𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱:
Mangkang salt field (盐田) is a world cultural wonder, blending into the palette of #nature. Located in Yanjing Town of Mangkang County, it spans both the east and west banks of the Lancang River. With a history of over 1,000 years, the #salt field is the only place in China that preserves the most complete and original manual salt drying method.
𝗣𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗻𝗼𝗼𝗱𝗹𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁:
Try local specialty jiajia noodles (加加面), literally "adding #noodles" in English, which is one of the region's intangible cultural heritages. Waiters make it their mission to keep refilling your bowl with mouthful noodles until you are satisfied – a heartwarming gesture of #hospitality. These noodles, made with #buckwheat flour and topped with minced Tibetan pork and scallions, are beyond just a meal. Fun to check out: count empty bowls with small stones and pay based on the number of stones.

As the holy land of the Tibetan people, #Yading Nature Reserve in Daocheng County is well known for its snow-capped mountains, vast grasslands, colorful forests and crystal-clear lakes. The place was the inspiration for James Hilton's well-known novel "Lost Horizon."
Bring along warm clothes, have proper sun protection and let's embark on an #adventure.
'𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗶-𝗟𝗮':
Covering an area of 56,000 hectares at an altitude ranging from 2,900 to 6,000m, the Yading Nature Reserve is known for being one of the best-preserved and most ancient natural scenic spots in China. Featuring untouched and amazing #plateau scenery, Yading Nature Reserve is often praised as "the last Shangri-La." It is also a habitat for rare species of animal like Tibetan #antelopes.
𝗔 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝗟𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀:
Milk Lake (牛奶海) shaped like a drop of water is an elegant glacial lake that got its name from the outermost layer of the lake water which is colored white. Pearl Lake (珍珠海) at about 4,000m above sea level looks like a piece of jadeite carved by nature. The reflection of the surrounding snow-capped mountains is mirrored in this holy lake making it a great place for shutterbugs.
𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗴𝘂 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘆 (冲古寺):
Sitting at an altitude of 3,900m, it's a site you cannot miss on your way to the Three Mountains of God in Yading. It was originally built during the Yuan Dynasty.
𝗧𝗶𝗯𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗽𝗹𝗲:
#𝘡𝘢𝘯𝘣𝘢 (糌粑) or tsampa, is originally made from highland #barley. This Tibetan herder staple, a favorite delicacy of Tibetan people, pairs perfectly with butter tea. Most of the 𝘻𝘢𝘯𝘣𝘢 sold to tourists are modern versions made with ghee, milk dregs and sugar. Have a try in local restaurant.
𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁:
🚶 Admire Three Mountains of God in a triangle formation in Yading
🏔️ Spot herds of cattle and sheep at Luorong Pasture (洛绒牧场) at the foot of the snow-capped mountains
🌊 Catch the sight of Milk Lake and Five-Color Lake (五色海) under changing #sunlight
👀 Visit Chonggu Monastery, and get to learn the architectural style and culture of Tibetan temples

On our route from Yajiang to #Litang, we'll meet the famous 18-zig road, part of the #G318 #highway on Jianziwan mountain on the Sichuan-Tibet highway. Jianziwan Mountain stands tall at 4,659m above sea level, one of the highest mountain passes along G318 in #Kham region. Beyond it we will see a vast expanse of alpine meadows.
'𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗸𝘆:'
Litang, with its untouched beauty, perched over 4,000m above sea level high on the Tibetan Plateau. In Tibetan language, Litang means "flat grasslands like bronze mirrors." Imagine the views!
Prior to 2020, few Chinese had heard of Litang until a 20-year-old good-looking Tibetan herdsman named Tamdrin, or Ding Zhen in Mandarin, became an Internet celebrity. His hometown, Litang, took center stage when his video went viral online. Suddenly, Litang became a hotspot.
𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻:
The #horse racing festival is a summer tradition in Litang. Get ready for the horseback stunts by the young. It has been a fun festival to watch, and tent camping is on the table too. The valley might be a great place to go for a walk during summer.
Have a good rest in Daocheng and wait for another adventurous day to unfold.

The 4,962m Zheduo Mountain (折多山) in #Kangding stands as a vital geographical divide. Beyond its peak is the eastern domain of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, or literally the Tibetan region. Gazing from the summit reveals the majestic peaks of Mount Gongga. High on the slopes, Tibetan prayer flags strung along trails and peaks, fluttering in the breeze as symbols of blessings.
𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁: Go for an epic panorama of Yala Snow Mountain, Mount Skubla and Mount Gonga at Yuzixi Pass (鱼子西垭口), a rare one of the sightseeing platforms in western Sichuan. Setting off from #Chengdu, we're about to dive into an incredible journey on the legendary #Sichuan-#Tibet Highway, part of #Route318. This highway, one of the world's highest, stretches all the way to #Lhasa in the west, traversing through valleys, plateau lakes, glaciers and snow-capped mountains. It's a year-round magnet for backpackers and road-trippers due to the diverse landscapes along the route.
But before we embrace the Sichuan-Tibet highway adventure, there's one essential stop in Chengdu: a #panda rendezvous.
𝗣𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗹: Get up early and save half a day for Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, or Chengdu Panda Base, a top choice to refuel on adorable energy. Built over 2,200 years ago, the Dujiangyan water conservancy project (都江堰水利工程) is the world's oldest irrigation and flood-control system that still functions. The unprecedented project greatly promoted the development of #agriculture. The Chengdu Plain has since embraced tremendous fertility.
𝗚𝗶𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗕𝘂𝗱𝗱𝗵𝗮: Make a stop at #Leshan (乐山), home to the Giant Buddha, which is on the #UNESCO World Heritage List. The towering 71m statue, believed to be the world's largest #Buddha, overlooking three converging rivers outside the city. Carved directly from the cliff rock of Mount Lingyun during the Tang Dynasty, it's a 90-year testament to artistry. As a local saying goes, "The mountain is a Buddha, and the Buddha is a mountain."
𝗟𝗲𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗗𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗰𝘆: Actually the real reason we come to Leshan is the food. The city is full of amazing snacks as well. Qiaojiao Beef (跷脚牛肉) is the chief representative of local food. It is a rich yet delicate slow-cooked #beef broth with pretty much all parts of the cattle. It is also friendly to people has little spicy food tolerance.

Today, let's explore nature's wonders in #Chongqing's outlying districts.
𝐑𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐠𝐞𝐬: Travel 2hrs to the Wulong Karst Geological Park from downtown Chongqing and meet the stunning Three Natural Bridges (天生三桥). Tianlong, Qinglong and Heilong bridges, three huge arch spans stretching over 300 meters with an average width of some 200m, form the largest set of natural bridges in Asia. Spanning two enormous natural pits, they create a marvelous spectacle.
𝐒𝐮𝐛𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐇𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐫𝐭: Furong Cave (芙蓉洞), the only #cave in China listed among World Natural Heritages, is another must-visit in #Wulong. This subterranean hall of art, where stalactites and stalagmites taking the form of waterfalls, flowers, grapes clusters and shields, is a testament to thousands of years of natural wonders.
𝐂𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐓𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐀𝐫𝐭 𝐋𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐜𝐲: Continue our trip 80km east of downtown Chongqing to Dazu, one of China's four major Buddhist caves and the one and only World Cultural Heritage in Chongqing. Admire the rock carvings dating from the 9th to the 13th century, showcasing religious subjects of Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism in a shocking scale. These carvings, coexisting harmoniously, radiate a profound aesthetic excellence and represent the pinnacle of Chinese cave temple art.
Our to-do list:

#Chongqing surely is a magic city! Nestled amid mountains, where Jialing River and the Yangtze River converge, lies "the city of fog." Since the evaporation of river water is not easy to spread, the city appears to be enveloped in a shroud of #fog quite often, hence its nickname.
Maze of Rails and Roads: Chongqing's unique mountainous geographical structure forms a maze of crossing rails and roads. Sometimes, even navigation apps fail to work here. The intriguing Liziba monorail station (李子坝地铁站), where a train passes right through a building overhead , has become a social media favorite. See for yourself!
Jiefang Monument (解放碑): Central to many attractions, architecture and diners, the landmark commemorates China's victory in WWII. Jiefangbei Square where the monument stands tall is worth a trip.
Feast for the Taste Buds: Calling all foodies craving for something pungent and spicy! Chongqing cuisine is a branch of Sichuan cuisine, one of the eight major Chinese cuisines. Get ready for an explosion of strong flavors, courtesy of garlic, chili peppers and sesame paste, and more. Test your spice tolerance with the city's famed Chongqing hotpot.
Noodle Paradise: The streets and alleys of Chongqing are lined with noodle stalls. Among them, the made-to-order xiaomian (小面), or Chongqing noodles infused with fresh herbs and spices, is a soulful delight, with or without broth.
Our to-do list:
🌄 Get to learn Chongqing's so-called "eight-dimensional" traffic in a taxi. Trust the local cab drivers, the true navigators of the city.
🚶Visit Chaotianmen (朝天门), where Jialing River and the Yangtze River meet
🚟Ride a cable car to cross the Yangtze River
😋 Brave the signature hotpot, put your spice tolerance to the test
🫡Visit the magic Hongya Cave, a real-world "Voyage of Chihiro" at night
