Alright. Strap in. This piece by EX IPA Alan Moran and published under 'Happy, Sad, CRAZY #RowanDean's 'Spectator' is a case study in right-wing fantasy economics, IPA brain-rot, and cooker poll alchemy.
Let’s tear it apart properly, using his own words and the mechanics he’s hoping readers won’t understand. All quotes and claims below are from Alan Moran’s article in The Spectator Australia.
1. The “Political Earthquake” That Exists Only in Alan Moran’s Head
“One Nation’s share of the vote market rise from 6.4 per cent … to 17 per cent … and now to 25 per cent.”
• This is the first sleight of hand.
• He never names the polls.
• never weights them.
• He never distinguishes primary vote from seat conversion.
He pretends “pretty consistent across all pollsters” is evidence, not vibes.
This is poll laundering: take a few noisy outliers, smooth them with a trend line, and declare a revolution. The chart on page 2 literally extends a dotted line into the future like a horoscope and calls it analysis.
Then comes the big fantasy jump:
“It cannot be discounted that One Nation’s support will crest at 40 per cent.”
This is not analysis.
This is numerology for people who hate maths.
Australia has:
• Compulsory voting
• Preferential voting
• Multi-member electorates
• Zero historical precedent for a party like One Nation breaking past the low 20s nationally
But Alan just waves at “inevitable deceleration” and keeps the fairy tale moving.
