On the day a verdict has been reached in the #SycamoreGap case, it's worth noting that @NationalHways has awarded a £29K contract to AmcoGiffen for the planting of trees, in compensation for those it felled unlawfully during the 'emergency' infilling of #RudgateBridge, Tadcaster.

When our campaign started, @NationalHways intended to infill or demolish 134 structures.
But what's happened to them since?
A highly-skewed masonry arch dating from the 1840s, #RudgateBridge - carrying a narrow lane - was infilled despite having an assessed capacity of 32 tonnes.

As expected, @northyorksc has granted @NationalHways retrospective planning permission for the retention of its 'emergency' infill at #RudgateBridge.
Five councillors voted in favour; one abstained due to concerns about the ability of the infill to permanently support the bridge.

We note that @northyorksc has recommended that @NationalHways is *granted* retrospective planning permission for its 'emergency' infilling of #RudgateBridge.
The application will be determined by the Council's Planning Committee on 9 October.
@SAVEBrit

Great piece on #RudgateBridge from @TCIndex, examining @NationalHways' attempt to secure retrospective planning application for its unnecessary 'emergency' infilling scheme.
Repairs to a nearby fence were needed.

Great to have @SAVEBrit voicing its objection to the loss of #RudgateBridge to @NationalHways 'emergency' infill scheme.
We need to respect our railway history and protect these structures so they can be part of a better future.
Time for NH to accept that reality or step away.

We've just submitted our objection to @NationalHways' attempt to retain its unnecessary and unlawful 'emergency' infill at #RudgateBridge.

Yup, that pretty much says it.
The consultation deadline for comments on @NationalHways retrospective planning to retain the infill at #RudgateBridge is tomorrow.
Please make your voice heard, like John did so eloquently.

A great piece by @TCIndex on @NationalHways' retrospective planning application to retain the infill at #RudgateBridge.
It clearly sets out NH's many failings and misrepresentations regarding this historic structure.

Great to see the @yorkshirepost looking into @NationalHways' attempts to have its unnecessary emergency infilling of #JohnCassBirkinshaw's historic #RudgateBridge regularised.

The #RudgateBridge saga is in @ncedigital's spotlight, setting out the hyperbolic claims made by @NationalHways to justify its emergency infilling.

Please OBJECT to the retrospective planning application for retention. Here's how...
https://t.co/iQhWf7mFfg
In an attempt to justify infilling #RudgateBridge in the Green Belt - which is only allowed in "very special circumstances" - @NationalHways claims there were "no viable options".
But it only had routine brickwork defects!
Please OBJECT.

When it forced through #RudgateBridge's infilling, @NationalHways felled/pruned trees in an area protected by a Tree Preservation Order. This is why such work should be scrutinised.
Please OBJECT to their retrospective planning application.

Pioneering engineer #JohnCassBirkinshaw was involved in the building of several historic railways.
But @NationalHways saw his #RudgateBridge as a liability and infilled it in 2021.
Please OBJECT to their retrospective planning application. Here's how...
https://t.co/iQhWf7nd4O

In 1847, pioneering railway engineer #JohnCassBirkinshaw opened the fabulous #RudgateBridge.
In 2021, @NationalHways exploited emergency rights to infill it, reducing liabilities. But NH now needs to secure planning permission.
Please OBJECT. Here's how…

@RegenerationEX Lack of oversight for years. Interested fundamentally in reducing liabilities, seeing no value in legacy structures. Money to spend in infilling rather than 'keeping them going'.
"Infilling preferable to repairs", as they said re #RudgateBridge. It became their default solution.
We're raising funds for legal help in support of our objections to the retrospective planning applications for the #ConghamBridge and #RudgateBridge infillings.
If you're able to chip in, we'd really appreciated it.

Very many thanks.
For those with an interest, our paper on the Class Q infillings at #RudgateBridge & #ConghamBridge is now available to download from our website.

@NationalHways refused to allow the paper to be discussed at a February's Stakeholder Advisory Forum meeting.
