After I was furloughed from Zantop at 22, I was hired by an airline called Mesaba to fly a #SA227 (Metroliner) out of Detroit. For the next 4 years I would accumulate nearly 4000 hours in that specific type.
In those days we were stashed in the "Back 9" behind the "Golf" concourse far removed from the passenger terminal. To get to the runway we would pass the "Fox" gates. This is where Northwest parked their #B747-400s. Like clockwork each day they would "push" as we were trying to depart.
Many times, they would block us and we would have to wait. I couldn't help but think, what it would be like if I had the chance to fly the -400 one day. Little did I know but that seed of a dream would one day become reality.
Seeing this photo brought me back to that time. The aircraft you see to the right is "N426MA" (SA227).
I flew that specific aircraft, and what memories I have. No autopilot. No Flight Director. No autothrottles. Most importantly? No toilet!
Although, it took 26 years to achieve that dream. Looking back at that time put a smile on my face. What an amazing ride it has been to get here.
