#Brain-#PredictsImages Before We See Them;
The #Saccade-Paradox:
Even though our eyes move abruptly, our perception doesn’t “shift” because the brain predicts the visual consequences of the movement before they happen.
The 94% Rule:
On average, the brain’s internal estimate of an eye movement reaches about 94% of the actual distance. This tiny, systematic error is called #HypoMetria.
#Efference-Copy:
The brain doesn’t wait for visual feedback to know where the eyes moved; it uses a “carbon copy” of the motor signal sent to the eye muscles to update its internal map.
#Predictive-Remapping:
Afterimages move with our gaze because they stay fixed on the retina. The brain, expecting the image to shift across the retina during a jump, concludes the “ghostly light” must be moving through space to stay in the same retinal spot.
#Adaptive-Mapping:
When the eyes get tired and movements shorten (saccadic adaptation), the brain’s internal prediction automatically adjusts to match the new, shorter movements.

Yay! The last, and most interesting, data on my handwriting study has arrived in my inbox. It’s handwritten of course. Time to write it up. #gaze #attention #BCI #saccade #memory https://t.co/CtYHyf4wMO
Meet the unsung hero of your vision: the saccade. These lightning-fast eye movements are how you navigate your world. But if they aren't working correctly, it can lead to reading difficulties and eye strain. #VTRS #Saccade #Saccadiceyemovement #Binocularvision #BV #eyecare

Study further supports oscillopsia as a real impairment to stabilise the image on the retina; those without oscillopsia can use #saccade strategies & rely on #visual information for #spatial orientation

Very grateful to this goalkeeper in an UG #eye movement project. We recorded in the evening, around 7pm, and he’d been fasting all day. #saccade #prediction #football #penalty
🔓Available to Read! 🔓This study reveals a new type of contextual #saccade adaptation: sequential saccades are able to induce contextual #SaccadeAdaptation when direction, amplitude, or the existence of preceding & following saccades are used as contexts.

I’ve lost track (no pun intended) of the people I’ve eye tracked over the last 3 weeks. People playing football, visually searching, and pointing. #saccade and #antisaccade studies. This is the nicest of today’s sites though

What role #eye movements may play in #auditory #perception? Using #eyetracking and #intracranial #EEG during natural viewing conditions we found that #neural excitability in the auditory system changes across the #saccade-#fixation cycle. Evidence from free viewing incl. #movies.

Your eyes will #saccade 3-5 times per second while you read this, but what coordinates oculomotor & visual systems? @YaliPan2 @neuosc &co show that alpha oscillations time the processing between saccades & visual system during natural reading #PLOSBiology https://t.co/C3qe5AGMWd
