I am disappointed to announce, that I am officially a #PalmerOut member and majority shareholder within the Chelsea FT community, as of today. — Can’t control tempo to play as a #10, he’s either up or down (Why Pep never played him centrally) — Stiff as hell so crazy angle bias — Struggles to creatively penetrate a low block. — Relies on open game-states to have any kind of influence. Only way to get the most out of him is to put him RW, Gusto overlapping, in a game where we are getting dominated in possession (i.e. aren’t an elite team) More thoughts: — His most impressive creative attribute is his vision/range in open-spaces. — Struggles to get involved in games against deep blocks being aggressively man-marked. He can’t sustain the levels we saw in 23/24 because we no longer play the same transitional style, and he’s not good enough to handle the superstar treatment he receives versus opponents nowadays where they won’t allow him space on the ball. — As a finisher, I actually think he’s quite average, actually below average. Stats back this up. Across his 3 seasons at Chelsea, all comps (npxG, data according to fotmob) 40.46 xG —> 35 goals. An under-performance of 13.5%… (underperforming the +/- 10% threshold…. #spooky) His goal-threat is also solely dependent on him receiving in those just outside the box conditions. He doesn’t have the off ball game to do more. I think he’s a decent player. Thankfully, I was vindicated this season when I said Cherki is better than him just around when he was signed. But I don’t think palmer’s the type of player you can have in your team to compete for Premier League’s. Champions League potentially, that can happen in one-off end-to-end encounters that we see. Because when do we ever see a style that facilitates central attacking players that are only effective in open spaces? Now he’s no longer carrying an injury, he still can’t penetrate blocks in the final 3rd, and consistently makes the wrong decision even WITH time/space BECAUSE of his angle bias. It’s like what we used to troll Mount for.
