At the third India–Nordic Summit in Oslo on May 19, 2026, Iceland’s Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for using the Hindi word “Sambandh” (meaning “relationship” or “connection”) to describe India’s ties with the Nordic countries, saying, “The world needs more ‘Sambandh’ today.” She highlighted this as a symbol of warmth, trust, and deeper human‑to‑human and nation‑to‑nation ties between India and Iceland. What “Sambandh” signified PM Modi repeatedly invoked Sambandh in his speeches at the summit to stress India’s commitment to closer, people‑centric cooperation with Nordic nations, especially in areas such as renewable energy, climate action, and innovation. Frostadóttir explicitly said she “loved” the word and underlined that in today’s polarised world, more such bonds of solidarity and mutual respect are required. Context of India–Iceland relations Bilateral ties have been strengthened around renewable energy, green industries, and digital innovation, with Iceland keen to increase investment in India under existing and emerging trade and technology frameworks. This public emphasis on Sambandh at the Nordic Summit fits into India’s broader “Nordic outreach” strategy, aimed at building a “values‑based” partnership with these advanced, low‑carbon economies.
