#SAPMP is proving that when farmers are empowered with infrastructure, skills, and markets, agriculture becomes a real business.
Since 2021, the Sustainable Agricultural Productivity and Market Linkages Project (SAPMP) has been playing a transformative role in strengthening agriculture in @GisagaraDistr and @NyanzaDistrict Districts. Implemented through a partnership between the Government of Rwanda and the Government of Korea, with support from @KOICA_Rwanda, SAPMP represents a USD 12 million investment aimed at increasing productivity, improving farmers’ incomes, and promoting market-oriented agriculture.
According to Mr. Bucyana Benjamin, Project Manager of SAPMP, the project has focused on both infrastructure development and farmer capacity building to ensure long-term, sustainable impact. A major intervention has been the rehabilitation and development of key marshlands, including 600 hectares of Nyiramageni marshland and 500 hectares in the Katarara area. These developments were accompanied by the construction of modern irrigation and drainage systems, land consolidation, terraces, and anti-erosion structures. In addition, the project supported rural infrastructure such as roads and bridges, as well as post-harvest storage facilities and administrative offices.
These investments have significantly increased agricultural productivity, reduced post-harvest losses, and improved farmers’ access to reliable markets. More than 3,000 farmers across Gisagara and Nyanza Districts are directly benefiting, all organized into cooperatives. Through these cooperatives, farmers are better positioned to aggregate produce, negotiate prices, and engage with structured markets.
Beyond physical infrastructure, SAPMP places strong emphasis on human capacity development. Farmers have been trained in modern and climate-smart agricultural practices, organic fertilizer production that matures within 45 days, financial literacy, savings culture, and farm asset management. Selected farmers and technicians also participated in exposure visits and specialized training programs in South Korea, strengthening technology transfer and practical learning.
The impact of this approach is evident at the farmer level. In Ntyazo Sector of Nyanza District, farmers are transitioning from subsistence production to agribusiness and value addition. One such example is NTIRISHWAMABIKO Jean Claude, who benefited from SAPMP’s training in soybean production and processing. Through the project, he acquired skills to process soybeans into tofu, adding value to his harvest and targeting higher-paying markets. The training also emphasized proper input use, recommended spacing, and conservation agriculture practices to maintain soil fertility and productivity.
Jean Claude has since diversified his farming activities, establishing an avocado orchard with more than 100 trees and running a nursery for grafted avocado seedlings sold to other farmers. This diversification has strengthened his income base and resilience to climate and market risks.
SAPMP also benefited from technical support provided by experts from the Government of Korea, who worked closely with farmers to improve marshland management, infrastructure maintenance, and the adoption of modern agricultural technologies. The success of SAPMP in Gisagara and Nyanza has already inspired further investment, with the Government of Korea expanding support to another marshland development project for rice farmers in @GatsiboDistrict.
Overall, SAPMP stands as a strong example of how strategic investment, infrastructure development, capacity building, and market-driven approaches can transform agriculture. By connecting farmers to knowledge, technology, and markets, the project is contributing meaningfully to improved livelihoods and a stronger, more resilient agri-food system in Rwanda.
