News: Salsay Weyane raises concerns over election conditions as #NEBE presses Interim Administration on preparations
Salsay Weyane Tigray (#SAWT) has raised concerns over the feasibility of holding elections in #Tigray under current conditions, warning that key prerequisites for a credible electoral process remain unmet, even as the National Election Board of #Ethiopia (NEBE) continues to push ahead with preparations for the seventh national general election scheduled for June 2026.
In a press release issued on yesterday, the party said the security situation in Tigray remains unconducive to free and fair elections, citing the absence of a fully functional civil administration capable of facilitating the electoral process.
SAWT also said that significant parts of the region remain under the control of what it described as illegal authorities, while millions of people displaced from these areas are unable to exercise their right to vote.
According to the party, this situation effectively deprives displaced populations of their fundamental right to self-determination. It stressed that NEBE’s responsibility extends beyond the act of casting ballots to ensuring that all conditions necessary for free, fair, and inclusive elections are fully in place.
The party reiterated that elections in Tigray should be treated differently, arguing that the region’s current security, administrative, and humanitarian challenges constitute core prerequisites for any credible electoral process.
The statement comes as NEBE last week, for the second time in a month, formally renewed its request to the Tigray Interim Administration to begin preparations at the constituency level. The Election Board urged the regional administration to prepare constituency and polling station offices ahead of the upcoming national vote.
NEBE said voter registration is scheduled to begin on 14 February 2026 and, in light of this timeline, called on the Interim Administration to ensure that constituency and polling station offices are prepared and ready for use by 2 February 2026.
While SAWT maintains that prevailing security, administrative, and displacement-related challenges undermine the possibility of credible elections in Tigray at this stage, NEBE has continued to emphasize the need for logistical and administrative preparations in line with the national electoral calendar.

Today we are thrilled to hand over our Twitter feed to our exceptional Syria Research Fellow, Farah Youssef (@FarahYsf7), as she attends the #SyriaConf2023 in #Brussels.
Being a fierce human rights defender and researcher/activist makes her the ideal ARI ambassador at this happening.
Farah leads the Syria pillar of our project; Supporting Arab Women at the Table (SAWT) and she will be sharing firsthand insights from the conference.
