🔵Broad-based selloff of telcos intensified in July with MTN, VOD and TKG down 13%, 7% and 11% month-to-date respectively (18 July 2024):
🔵Telcos have been the worst performing sector on the JSE year-to-date with MTN, VOD and TKG delivering total returns of -33%, -12% and -27% respectively.
🔵More than 100 consecutive days with no load shedding in SA together with post-election optimism has done little to shift negative sentiment.
🔵Sentiment appears poor as the sector has delivered negative earnings growth over past 3 years. Nigeria fx uncertainty remains a structural headwind for MTN.
MTN retained as a buy but TP lowered from R120 to R110
VOD buy retained but TP lowered from R110 to R106
TKG upgraded to buy, TP R33 retained

Summary of research on British American Tobacco (BAT):
Key points:
BAT released its pre-close update for 9M23.
Revenue is expected to grow at the lower end of 3-5% and adjusted EPS is expected to grow by a mid-single digit rate at constant FX.
Net debt to EBITDA is expected to decline to c. 2.7x.
BAT will accelerate investment in NGPs and reset the US business in FY24E.
Share buy-backs are unlikely to be restarted until FY25E.
The target is to derive more than 50% of revenue from NGPs by 2035.
BAT will take a £25bn non-cash charge against its US brand values in FY23E.
Net debt/EBITDA is expected to decline to 2.7x and share buy-backs are unlikely until 2025E at the earliest.
FY23E and FY24E estimates are trimmed, with adjusted EPS expected to be 381p and 386p respectively.
Overall, the research suggests that BAT is facing some headwinds in the US market, but that the company is still well-positioned for long-term growth.
