On this day in 1966, the Beatles released the extraordinary #EleanorRigby. The great Meshell Ndegeocello, recording her debut album Plantation Lullabies in 1992, talks about being introduced to the Beatles by her producer, ex-#ScrittiPolitti keyboardist David Gamson.
"After a few days of recording, David comments that my bass tone, and the fact that I use flat-wounds, reminds him of Paul McCartney, who plays a Hofner bass. Such an amazing sound. David encourages me to listen to the Beatles. 'Go check ‘em out.'
"So I head to the hotel room that night, super excited, just had a great day of recording. And before you know it, he sends me drifting . . . through the looking glass . . . down a deep Beatles rabbit hole.
"That night I listened to 'Eleanor Rigby' on repeat for at least two hours. Listening to John and Paul’s songwriting I felt enchantment . . .
"'Eleanor Rigby' was a classical chamber piece created inside the pop music machine. I love how the harmony was structured; it went way beyond the standard I-to-IV-chord experience. And the way the chorus moved like a hymn. It was one of those songs that felt like it sounded — or sounded like it felt. I could see the imagery as the words went by through my mind like a picture show . . .
"In 1970, Aretha Franklin covered 'Eleanor Rigby.' Aretha takes the Beatles' original and she uproots it, re-plants it in her own garden. Lots of black artists did: Ray Charles, Johnny Mathis, Shirley Bassey.
"Black artists covered the Beatles for the same reason everybody else did: the songs. The Fab Four were other-worldly songwriters."
